Bavaria Yacht Help! / Wiring a lifepo4 battery bank
« Last post by elias on November 07 2024, 09:39 »
Hi,
I am planning to install a lifepo4 battery bank consisting of 3 100AH lifepo4 batteries 12v. Instead of interconnecting them with tin cable I am thinking to make a tinned bus bar from copper . The bus will be 5mm thick 25mm wide with M8 holes . There is this diagram guide I found online about cabling lead acid batteries but does this apply to lithium ? Do they have internal resistance behaviour like that?
I am planning to put parallel the bus bars passing and connecting the positive and negative poles of the batteries .

Thanks. I don't have a problem with internal dampness so I block off 1 of the vents. Just got to work out how to fit the autopilot drive.

I wasn't quite joking about the port wine. Ours was listing to starboard as well due to a large battery upgrade under the starboard settee. But we put the food in the portside settee and the canned food in the portside bilge under the galley floor and that balanced it out.

The port wine went in the central bilge to keep cooler ;-)

Less ventilation!

Which has minor consequences, such as more mould growing in the boat, but nothing more than that. We had those two on the 40 Ocean. In the deep of winter I would tape them both up. Even with the forced air diesel heater sucking its combustion air from this area, there was no issue - the companionway hatch was drafty enough to let new air in! :)

We ran a dehumidifier in the cabin to control the humidity though.

I just wonder how much weight  I would need. 90 m of 10 mm chain in the port bilge had no effect to correct the list. Perhaps I would need to place any counter weight  nearer the water line?

I am trying to work out a position for an autopilot linear drive attached to the steering quadrant. On the ort side a large plastic vent pipe - about 75 mm diameter  runs from the top of the transom  to about 20 cm above the bilge. There is also another pipe similar size on the port side but does mot descend  to the bilge. I'd like to take the long one out as it will be in the way. Any consequences if I do this?

Modifications & Equipment / 2001 47 cruiser, partly rotten toe-cap replacement
« Last post by UP on November 06 2024, 12:22 »
Hi,

My 2001 Bav 47 cruiser has a partly rotten teak toe cap (image attached). One segment in portside is heavily splintered and the outside part does not hold screws and the steel rub-guard is loose at places. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and would like to do something about this situation. There are minor leaks through stanchions, but nothing that a handful of butyl tape could not fix. However I'm thinking of replacing the teak with aluminum profile. It would not look as classy and beautiful, but the aluminum cap would be way more functional. It would give me good tying points for the safety net (two smallish kids) and it would give tying points for my planned 360-degree cockpit canvas enclosure.

My question is - has anyone experience with this? Any issues? A good idea or a bad idea? A potential issue I see is galvanic corrosion between stainless stanchion bases and the aluminum toe rail. This can be mitigated with some rubber bushings, for example. I could replace the cap with teak, however it is more work and the end result is not as functional as the aluminum counterpart.

I've attached an example aluminum profile I found on the internet (attached below).

NB - the previous owner of the boat cleaned out the sikaflex joint between the deck plate and the hull and fiberglassed the joint shut (3 layers).

Wishing your wife the best recovery.

My thoughts - partly also as my professional role of managing lean development... You might want to take a look at the concept of 5S - visual management.

If you manage to handle finding items (from master list) using the four-letter-codes, returning them coulf be managed by labeling every item, box, container etc with fixed four-letter label. (= preventing chaos, preventing the inevitable increase in enthropy)

Having a wrench in hand - label in wrench handle saying NLSA could help it finding it's way back to navigation station low-starboard-aft locker:)

BR,

Tommi - s/y Anniina

Sorry to hear of your wife's diagnosis and sincerely wish you both well for the future....
I've lived on boats both commercially and leisure for intermittent periods of a few days to several months over the last 30 odd years, and like you living, working offshore or in cold remote locations requires the carrying the numerous spares and supplies you describe..
But it's my experience that in the busy maritime environment chaos sets in far to easily and regular housekeeping is a necessity to mitigate the problem of numerous infrequently used items being 'temporarily' stowed 'out of place' and forgotten about prompting a panicked search some time later....Like I say we get used to it..

Thanks for taking the time to provide the feedback.  We have lived aboard our boat for five years and i do lnow what you mean.  You are correct that if allowed, things can become chaotic which for us puts a damper on the fun of it.  I believe that this little drawing and plan works great for it's intended purpose in a tight living space.  On our boat in the past five years we have seen temporary chaos, particularly during a feastly meal or a big project but the power tools have always been put away in their designated cubby, same goes for a tote of hand tools, as have the outboard engine spares, plumbing bits, electrical connectors and so on.  It has worked well, that is until we moved back ashore and let down our mojo.

My wife was recovering over the past weekend from a surprize diagnosis and immediate cancer surgery.  She was in and out of slumber and as I was tending to her I thought, "hmmmm I might have the time to sketch this idea out."  So I did this over three days of not much else to do and this is the result.

I quite like the results and given the number of similar boats thought I'd share.
