The hull is cored there, so you can screw into the core and Bavaria has done this in places. Don't use too long screws (core is 20mm, IIRC).

I didn't fancy doing this for the solar charger, so I sanded off some flowcoat and epoxied a bit of wood to the hull to mount things on. Also makes it easier, as you can mount them on the board first and then glue it on and just connect the wires.

And if you want to be really fancy, you glue a couple wooden strips or small blocks to the hull that you can then use as mounting points for larger things, including plywood or whatever cutting board you can scrounge up in a Portuguese supermarket :D

The hull is foam-cored, and the original charger is screwed on to the inner fibreglass layer.  If you remove a screw, you'll no doubt find it's quite short.

@Keweetoo the oil seals arrived yesterday, after installing them we MacGyver'ed a pressure test. A 12V compressor + drilled a hole through an old oil plug and hot glued an attachment point for the compressor to the oil plug. The pressure kept stable for more than a minute so we passed the Volvo Pressure test  ;D

So these dimensions are correct: outside diameter: 50,80 MM x inside diameter: 31,75 MM. The thickness of the seals can be 6,35 MM or 9,52 MM.

"Connect the pressure gauge to the oil drain hole. Pump the pressure up to a level not exceeding 78 kPa (11.31 psi). Check that the pressure remains constant for 1 minute."

Modifications & Equipment / Bavaria 39 Cruiser screwing charger to hull.
« Last post by marp on February 24 2024, 10:02 »
Hi, I plan to change charger, to charger-inverter on my Bavaria 39 Cruiser sailboat, original charger seems to be screwed directly to hull, or is there some additional layer of wood lamineted? New charger inverter is 20kg and I dont like idea of screwing it directly to hull... Do You know if it is safe to screw it in the place of old one? I was thinking about making some wooden frame, but still I would need to attach it somehow to hull (probably laminate it).

Thanks for the feedback!
I will look into the Epsilon as well. I was just wondering if there was anyone out there who had already gone through this and had a confirmed fit already.

Many manufacturers have a template or dimensioned drawing so that you can try it out on your roller. however most newer designs have a high crown so i don't think you can do anything about your chute tack fouling without an extension of some sort. suggest you add Epsilon to your list typically half the price of others and performs just as well on tests. Optional bolt on roll bar but I am not sure anybody bothers

Modifications & Equipment / Inverter wiring using existing 220v sockets
« Last post by JohnK on February 23 2024, 16:38 »
Hi everyone,

Posting this in case anyone finds it useful.

I wanted a better way of wiring our Sterling inverter into the boat so that power would be available at all the sockets around the saloon & cabins AND BE SAFE.

This requires some mods because you don't want to be running the inverter to drive the battery charger to charge the battery to drive the inverter...! Ditto for water heater... I took a look at the Bavaria panel (2005 version) and managed to find the same connector part types used originally by Bavaria so it could be returned to stock if ever desired. I also wanted to keep to a manual switch rather than a more expensive inverter/charger layout.

I found some purpose made solutions for this, but they still required changes to the panel, so I decided to do my own.

The changeover switch now switches power sockets onboard between shore and inverter power while keeping the big users ie water heater and battery charger on shore power only.

Attached are some photos - if anyone is interested. Its nearly finished - comments welcome!

***Disclaimer - this is what we are doing*** It isn't a guarantee it will work for you. Please get anything electrical checked by a professional.

Modifications & Equipment / Anchors that fit Bavaria 42CR
« Last post by JohnK on February 23 2024, 15:33 »
Hi everyone,

I'm looking to replace the old CQR anchor on our (new to us) Bavaria 42CR 2005.

Ideally one of the newer designs Rocna, Manson etc with roll bar if worthwhile.

I'm looking for anyone who has upgraded their anchor and can confirm it fits well on this type of anchor roller.

At some point we may fit a bowsprit for a cruising chute - on our last boat it wouldn't get past the delta anchor so sometimes we had to choose between anchoring and sailing!

We are based in W Scotland but hoping to go further afield.

Thanks to all for the help!

Modifications & Equipment / Re: Stainless steel exhaust elbow

I was also thinking about corrosion and galvanization, but since it was always the cast iron parts that corroded and not the heat exchanger, I conclude that galvanization is not the problem, but ordinary corrosion.  After all, galvanization occurs if two different metals are immersed in an electrolyte solution (seawater), and this is not the case here, because seawater only passes through the exhaust elbow.

Guys thank you for your opinion!  I needed this.

The boat is mostly in Croatia and the fuel is good.  The previous owner is never completely thin.  3 years ago, I left the tank half full over the winter, and algae grew, luckily it was a short drive so I didn't have a problem, but the filter was black!  We were in Greece last year, the fuel is worse but not critically bad.

If I understood correctly, you replaced the standard prefilter with the F500?
