Rudder tube cap Ocean 47
« on: September 06 2023, 20:25 »
The rudder  tube on my boat consists of a rubber hose  clipped to the base with a cap through which the rudder shaft passes above the water line. The cap seems to be made from ferrous metal and its rusting. I wonder if this is the standard fitting or someone's modification. The cap will need replacing.I don't want to  drop the rudder just for that. It should be possible to  machine up a cap in two interlocking parts which  could be fitted with the rudder in situ.

Ours was a standard lip seal of suitable inner (rudder stock) and outer (rudder tube) diameter. I've replaced it when I had the rudder out with a new one with stainless spring.

Mine is - if I understand your post - different and so non-standard?

What is non-standard about it? Looks like a rusty old lip seal where the metal has rusted through the rubber body. That hose clip holds it in place (two in our case). Even if it's some custom machined plastic part, it's still suitable to replace with a lip seal. If you do not want to drop the rudder, Jefa sells a gaiter that you can glue around the post while in place, although it's designed to go on the aluminium extension of the rudder tube at the bottom, not the riser hose that you have.

https://jefa.dk/products/sealing-systems/ (the "unglued state" is what you want for installation with rudder in place).

Thanks, I might try that and maybe epoxy coat the top  of the old cap.

I gave out to machine two halves of green self lubricating plastic. Did two ocean passages with this settings and works fine ... Can take picture of it within 10 days when I am on a boat again ... regards, Ted

yes Ted that would be most helpful  - also if you could add some detail about the material (green plastic) that you used.
