Winch service
« on: July 03 2021, 17:19 »
In the process of giving winches a much needed service, lots of advice on internet but nowhere can I find the recommended lubrication of the roller bearings.    Grease for gears and light oil for pawls and springs.

Same grease as everything else - only the pawls are special as they mustn't stick. A light coating will do.

You can buy grease from Harken or Lewmar particular for winches.

Or multi purpose marine grease for slow bearings.

I prefer the Harken grease.  It doesn't get quite so sticky.  The Lewmar grease gets very thick with age.
