Squeaky Rudder - Video
« on: December 30 2016, 16:03 »
Any thoughts on my suddenly quite squeaky rudder? I have tried putting some oil onto the bearings.

Thanks

Sounds just like my wheel when the wheel brake tensioner is on, check the stud and the plate is releasing properly you will have to take panel off binicle and look up inside. Use some WD40.

Looks like the wheel is warped, could that be due to some sort of recent impact which may have distorted the spindle and hence the squeak?

When mine did that oil quietened it down for a while but at the end of that season movement in the rudder showed that the bearing was worn to the point of needing replacement. The bearings should not need oil and instructions supplied with new ones stress that point. The squeaking I had was best heard at the top of the rudder near the locking nut - is yours the same?

Yes it sounds as if its coming from the locking nut.

Your wheel looks very warped.

Try spraying some ptfe on the bearing behind the wheel and see if that shuts it up.

If it does, then it's the wheel bearing, and if it doesn't then it could be the rudder bearing.

Sprayed some GT85 on the nut under the lift up cover - and the noise appears to have gone away!

Will keep an eye on it.

With your warped and wonky wheel Willfinch, I'd keep my eye well away from it and leave it to the GT85 to sort out!!

The rudder on my 2007 Vision 40 gets squeaky from time to time. In my case it is the load bearing washer just under the locking nut. Sometimes a fresh water rinse works but the best is to use McLube Sailcote, a fast drying teflon spray.
