Panel switch no. 13
« on: October 24 2016, 11:35 »
Hi.

I've a 2001 bav40, the switch panel has a mystery switch which I have spent quite a lot of time trying to find its use  ???

Number 13 doesn't seem to do anything.

Is there any one with any ideas?

Could it be an optional extra that I don't have fitted on this boat?

Cheers

Ian

Think you will find that is the cigar lighter type 12v socket with a 5 amp fuse.

The cigarette lighter is powered by switch no. 8 (frei 8A). unless there is another lighter socket somewhere on the boat.

the socket switch 8 services is just below the plotter on the nav table.

Hmmm ???

Also, I haven't worked out what switch number 16 operates either, but I am hoping that it's free.

When you have more electronics than switches, what does anyone do to turn them on and off? has anyone ever installed a new switch panel somewhere?

My switch 13 (same panel) is for the tricolor light and has an appropriate symbol for it. Yours looks more like a heater symbol, so possibly there was/is a heater of some kind (diesel, propane, electric stove ignition, etc.)?

"frei" means "free", so if you connect these to anything, you should print a label and stick it over it to tell what they're for :)

My switch 16 is indeed free now (it was previously used for a bodge-fix to switch off the chartplotter, which had a non-working power button).

If you really want to know for certain, follow the wire!

Ah, yea, it could be the stove ignition, It was suggested by the previous owner that it could be heating, but the Eberspacher diesel heater works with just the batteries switched on, so I am going to try the stove ignition, as I had not thought about that, The stove buttons do have an electronic ignition symbol on it so that could be correct. thanks.

I'd sussed the Frei/free translation, well assumed anyway but good idea to stick a label over them.

Thank you :)

My switch 13 with identical symbol is for heater - but most likely this is aftermarket installation by the broker.

The "Frei" for our boat is used for UHF radio and UHF / TV antenna amplifier

Tommi  - with a B40 2001 as well

Thanks Tommi

It's not helpful when things like this aren't standard, like the symbols on the switches.  >:( pfft!

I will try the stove ignition on Thursday evening, and then trace the cables from the back of the panel and see if I can follow them.

Thanks  :)

Ian, on my boat there is a similar symbol on a switch (not exactly the same but very close) and it is for the propane line shut off solenoid valve; unless the power is on the solenoid closes the valve for the propane as a safety measure. The solenoid valve is usually situated very close to the propane bottle itself. Mine is right next to the regulator in the tank locker. This automatic solenoid is mandatory in US market boats and in most charter boat specs I believe.

You might not have a solenoid valve installed depending on the original options chosen or the market the boat was supplied to originally.

I think that usually the igniters on gas ovens/hobs are either piezo crystals or battery operated.

Hope that helps.

Helps very much Kibo thank you. Yes I guess it would be for an optional solenoid, but this boat was never for charter, so that's why it hasn't got one.

Thanks for that :)

Have you looked at the back of the panel to see whether it is actually connected to anything. We have several unconnected switches on our panel. (1994 350 lagoon)

...Yours looks more like a heater symbol...
Clearly. The function will be shown on the wiring diagram in the manual.

Thanks Nigel, But I can't make head nor tail of the manual, those pages are very tatty.

Also it's not the stove ignition :(

On my Bav 38 Ocean, there is a heater symbol against switch 13 although looking at the rear of the panel, nothing is wired to it
