Bav 33C 2006 - shaft Sealing ring
« on: February 28 2016, 21:51 »
Hi guys,

any ideas where / what would be the cheapest way to get a new shaft sealing ring?
while bring down the rudder and cleaning the post, I noticed a round rusted spring coming down the shaft. Soon we realized that the spring came out of the shaft sealing ring (top part of the rubber boot) -  the ring (top part of the boot) is also rusted in one area and for sure not in good shape to go back in.

Bav Plus web site: https://www.bavariaplus.de/en/produkt/view/ahJlfmJhdmFyaWFwbHVzLXZpdXJyFAsSB3Byb2R1a3QYgICAgOaihQgM/?

So, has anyone repaired this or must I bite the bullet and order it from Bavaria.

Many thanks,
Hratch

i have not done it by myself.

i just google the measurements with the german word "simmering" whats means sealing ring

several possipillitys for example

http://www.ebay.de/itm/65x100x10mm-Nitril-Gummi-Radialwellendichtring-mit-Strumpfband-Feder-R23-TC-/131728781792?hash=item1eaba5b1e0:g:6doAAOSwofxUf3hI

On the side of your old seal will find the serial number and identification. I ordered my replacement from here:

Simply Bearings: http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/?gclid=CKbCjs_JnMsCFaISwwodsJMGsQ

ps they also supply o-rings for everything so if you need any or want to stock spares it would be a good idea to order these too and save on postage costs  ;)

Got mine from Eastern Seals, who kindly inserted a stainless spring into it for no extra cost. Charged me £5 plus shipping.

Mine (B40O) was a 60x100x10 R23 NBR (Nitrile).

Tnx guys. So how often are these seals changed ir better yet,  why not grease them up with waterproof grease under and over as the metal ecposed is crap and bound to rust again.

Anyone doing preventive maintenance on the seals?

Bought my boat second hand in 2010 when it was eight years old and changed the saildrive bottom bearings and the associated seal over winter 2010/2011. At that time it was noticed that the saildrive oil had water in it resulting in the oil going very cloudy looking. Also changed the saildrive hull seal at the same time which while it seemed like a good idea, it was actually a bit of a waste of money as the hull seal was found to be in very good condition.

Just found the sealing ring on Simply Bearings .co.uk...
http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p25102/55x80x10mm-Nitrile-Rubber-Rotary-Shaft-Oil-Seal-with-Garter-Spring-R21-/-SC/product_info.html

excellent price and good web site.

Salty, we are also replacing the Saildrive oil seals..

these seals are designed for oil not salt water.... hence, good idea to stuff them with waterproof grease.

thanks,

ALB,

I'd change them whenever dropping the rudder, which is hopefully quite rare. Do note that mine now has a stainless spring, which ought to be less prone to rusting than the standard spring. I slathered the whole bottom of it thick in silicone grease before putting it in there.
