oil leak saildrive
« on: March 19 2014, 19:58 »
Hoping someone can point me in the right direction please.
We have a oil leak that seems to be coming from the top housing on the saildrive selector fitting, it runs down the body and collects in the rings around the god seal. Roughly loosing a pint of oil after 40 miles.

I check level by resting saildrive dipstick on housing and not screwed home, as i believe this is correct ?

The engine does not loose any oil, or show any sign of leakage.

Engine D-2 55-C  Saildrive MS25S

Any help would be very grateful, thank you.

I had an oil leak on my 120se leg a while ago. It turned out that I had nicked the o ring that sealed the top plastic fitting. Geoff

It is essential to keep the O ring under the oil filler cap in best condition - changing it every year is worth the small cost. It expands quite quickly in use and releases oil when under way. This could explain your oil loss.

Exactly what happened to me few years ago and drove me mad. Eventually replaced o ring. End if story.  I was loosing a bit but still a mess on the god seal. Make sure u remove both caps once in a while to release pressure and then measure oil level.

Thank you all very much for pointing me in the right direction, as a result on our last voyage
San Jose - Cartagena approx 72 Nm.

I had replaced o ring on dip stick in January as part of service. Will double check I received correct size.

On voyage I went below and put eyeball on engine, the leak was oil pushing past 2 o rings on brass stopper top of oil breather pipe. One o ring seamed stretched, I bunged it with some rag.

On arrival the oil loss was minimal, so will try to acquire replacements here as we are here for a month.

Will update findings late April when we move on.

Many thanks again to every one.

Thank you every one who replied, yes it was the o-ring. All sorted now, fair winds.
