Why do I keep being asked to enter letters from an image?

Nigel:
Part of the registration process requires you to enter letters from an image, known as a CAPTCHA and to answer a simple question. This is a precaution to ensure that the response is generated by a person, not an automated process. Note that the text you type is not case-sensitive.

In addition, there is a CAPTCHA requirement while making the first few posts; this is removed automatically after these have been made. 

Sorry if these are inconvenient, but unfortunately there are a lot of bad-guys out there  :(
