2003 bavaria 38, companionway
« on: August 20 2023, 19:40 »
Hi. I have a 2003 Bavaria 38. 3rd owner.  The companionway door (not hatch) was a pretty plexiglass piece with a rectangular lock thst seems to have been glued onto the plexi-glass.

Unfortunately i dropped the door with the key in the lick. The key brole off and a locksmith couldn’t get the broken key out.

So:
1 - does anyone else have a lock like this?  If so, where did you get it?
2 - i have been thinking since getting this boat that, as i want to turn it into a true cruiser, i want to have a water-tight hatch.  Has anyone made their companionway hatch water-tight?  If so, how did you do it?

Thanks!

If the lock looks like the pic below, you can get it from SVB.  If it's different, still look at the SVB website - they have other Bavaria lock styles.

Or the Mobella lock: https://www.yachtshop.eu/en/product_motomarine/0344520/Mobella%20secure%20latch%2055x87mm%20black

We made ours water- (and equally important: mosquito-proof) by extending the side guides at the top with a piece of HDPE cut to match and a rubber seal at the bottom. Oh, and a door seal strip at the top as well, glued to the sliding hatch where it meets the washboard.

There's a slot on the inside, where you can just see two teethed bars peeking out. These are connected to the noses that slot into gaps in the washboard. To release the lock, grab each toothed bar with a small screwdriver and pull them both inwards to release the noses, then take the lock out upwards. Bit fiddly, but very doable. The correct tool is probably a small gearwheel on a shaft with a handle :)
