D2-55 not working anymore
« on: November 29 2022, 14:44 »
Hi,

My boat is back in the water after 3 months.
I started the engine and it ran but not smoothly.
I added some power but after a while it would run da badly that I turned it off.
Before I retry i wanted to know if there’s anything obvious I should check so I don’t run a chance of severely breaking something?

I noticed one odd thing: at the top of the engine at the lid, there’s cooling liquid dripping. When I loosened the lid of the cooling liquid expansion tank (level was between min and max), cooling fluid would be pressed out.

Also attached an image. If I open the marked lid, cooling fluid will come out as if being pushed by force.

Do you have anymore pictures? I don't like the look of the oil seeping out around the head. Maybe someone more experienced could give advice, but it doesn't look right to me.

There's no oil seeping. It's sweating a bit, but that's ok given its age.

The only d2/55 that I have used was on a Beneteau 411 .It had a manual pull engine stop control. If the engine stop was not FULLY pushed back in the engine huffed and puffed like crazy. Geoff

That's a good tip if the engine stutters. I'll try to remember it.
This time it was luckily only missing priming :-)

If the engine ran rough soon after starting, it sounds like a fuel issue, particularly if the engine ran more roughly when accelerated. I would check the filters ( see if dirty)  and the off/on switch ( may be blocked by diesel bug).
Do you have a good water flow out of the exhaust? If not, check the salt water system. ( Strainer, Impellor, Heat exchanger, exhaust elbow)

Do you use the correct starting procedure?
Push on,  wait for double bip,  then push with fast pression start, you heard another bip, wait 30 seconds and push start again.

Thanks for all the responses. The problem is already solved.
The motor has a push button to prime it. It did not get enough fuel and stuttered because I forgot to use that priming pump.
It's located on the left hand side, in vicinity of the emergency stop lever.

The black thingy can be pushed.
Now that I look at it closer: I think this is an additional fuel filter that was added later. The bracket holding it does not look original.

The filter is original, although the bracket does appear to have been replaced.

Edit: The original bracket was replaced by a different part number, so perhaps your engine had a failed bracket and an improved bracket was fitted.

The black button is used only when you need to purge  air from fuel system when change fuel filters.
Did you tried the starting system I suggest you? It is important the function of preheat of the little spark plugs.
