2006 B36 - How wide are aft cabin doorways?
« on: January 21 2017, 15:45 »
Title says it all .... we're buying a portable fridge which will be stored in the spare aft cabin. With the boat being in Corfu & us in the UK we need to know if the fridge we're looking at will fit through the aft cabin door.

Does anyone know or can anyone measure the doorway with into the aft cabin on a 2006 B36

thanks in advance

I'd have thought it would need to be a huge portable fridge not to be able to go through the doorway!

It is huge ....90 litres capacity, 1 metre long, 500mm wide ...it's the 500mm wide that I'm concerned about

Not the same boat but working on the theory that all Bavs might be similar .... my aft cabin doors are 450mm wide on a Vision 46. Can't believe the 36 are going to be wider...

Think you might have to buy the next size down  ;D

We bought a Dometic/Waeco which is 370x600x450  it is big enough for two cruising long term as an addition to our built in standard fridge/freezer.

B37 (2006) - aft doors are 450 x 1600

.....ps: I'm also intrigued about what you are going to do with it if you can get it in. Sit it on top of the fuel tank or water tank? ::)  :o

We've got the cruiser version with two aft cabins. As we never have any more than 4 on board the second aft cabin is used as storage.....mainly food & drink. The original fridge just doesnt cut in the med for ice (we like our ice) so a decent portable unit will become the main fridge .... think of it as a second fridge in the utlility room at home :)

Hmm, certainly a big fridge.  You could probably get a bit more width by removing the door frame.  Obviously this would mean the fridge would have to stay in there after you'd replaced the frame.

Hi Jonathon

We're in the Med and last year I rebuilt my fridge (2004 Bav 38).
We now make ice quite efficiently.

Contact me for further details if you think I can help.

I followed much advice already on this forum.
I have written it all up in my blog - http://darleymist.blogspot.co.uk/p/blog-page_11.html

Hope that it makes sense to you all.

I'm open for more questions if it is not clear.

Thanks Mike, good reading.

Unfortunately the fridge on the B36 is at the "back" of the L-shaped galley. Access to the void behind the cool box is very limited and the likelihood of "voids" if we went down the "skoosh the expanding foam" route is quite high which kind of defeats the purpose.

We like the idea of a portable unit if for no other reason we can take it onto our next boat if we wanted to.

Hi Jon,
The following are measurements taken from my B36/2002 with twin aft cabins. The doorway opening for what it's worth is 470mm, the door itself is slightly larger, but this is not the measurement you need. The useable width of the door opening on the starboard side is 438mm due to the proximity of the edge of the chart table which prevents the door from opening further. On the port side, again the opening is 470mm, but again this is not the limiting width where because of the door opening against the cupboard next to the oven, the limiting width of the remaining available space is 450mm. In each case you will need to reduce the width of whatever you want to pass through the doorway by a further couple of millimetres in order to avoid scratching the door or frame. Removing the door would allow an absolute maximum width of 470mm (but again this is most likely to result in scratched woodwork unless you allow a further couple of millimetres clearance). To remove the door requires removal of two screws on each of the two hinges. (pain in the butt if you intend frequent movement of the fridge).

Thanks to all who helped me out with this.

I've been able to establish that on the 2006 B36 the frame is 475mm with the door removed. The fridge dimension is 472mm but with some helpful advice from the manufacturers (waeco/Dometec) the fridge lids can be removed as well as the corner protectors reducing the critical dimension to 466mm ....... so  it will fit.

We now have one of http://www.jacksonsleisure.com/caravan-motorhome/cool-boxes/electric/waeco-coolfreeze-cfx95dz2-12v-24v-mains-portable-fridge-freezer/ on it's way to Greece :)
