laminated floor repair
« on: May 14 2016, 16:37 »
The plywood flooring has a thick lamination to it with a mock holly and teak pattern - its fairly brittle so  if something heavy  gets dropped on it the surface is likely to  chip - these chips now need filling with a material that's as hard wearing and a good colour match. Has anyone discovered a product for this?

To repair some screw holes I did mean to experiment with resin and pigment, but in the end I just used wood filler. Easy to replace when it fails.

For the brown you might try mixing epoxy with microballoons which are red/brown colour, or use a gel coat tint with some silica in the epoxy to thicken it.

on another boat I used Ronseal wood filler  but the 2 part stuff has only 3 colours and assumes a stain will be applied which I have doubts about Ronseal also do  a 1 part multipurpose filler which more colours but I wonder how hard the finish is. The micro balloons I have aren't a good colour match - can you get these in different shades?

Microballoons from Blue Gee in Poole are brown - as are West Systems. You can alter the shade of brown by adding a white filler such as Collodial Silica or wood fibre. You can also get pigments to add to the epoxy, but not sure whether a dark brown is available.

I think good match can be achieved using epoxy with sawdust (actually sander dust) of a wood with similar color.
