Holding Tank Location?
« on: December 21 2015, 12:06 »
Hi All,

I am looking to fit a Black water holding tank to my Bavaria 36Holiday and would prefare it to be a simple gravity emptying system.
Does anyone know the best location for this? and what size should I be looking at.

Thanks
Mick

I think that gravity only would be impossible - somewhere there must be a pump.
for blackwater there is the heads pump that lifts the water to the holding tank height, from where it can be discharged by gravity.
For greywater they could  go into the tank by gravity but from there you would have to pump them out.
Most natural position would be somewhere under the floor panels. Size, location and complexity of plumbing would depend heavily on intended use (kitchen, heads sink, shower basin) and intended period between discharges.

Yes its for the heads.
But what location?

Why not find out where Bavaria fitted them in production?

We have a 36 H. The Blackwater holdingtank is located up in the locket under the washbasin. I believe  the PO installed it There.  It empties without pump. It's relative small.
We have stopped using it and installed a Natures Head instead.

The original would have been a pumped system with the tank on the opposite side of the boat. Not a good idea and very few boats were fitted with it. A gravity tank might fit in the locker in the heads compartment, but it must be above the waterline to be gravity. On my very similar 37 I managed to get a 60l tank in there without any problem. Practically a 40l capacity is minimum to be useful. Make sure your design has an access over the outlet, an outlet for pumpout and a good size, say 25mm air vent.

Thanks to Par and Symphony for your replies.

Symphony:- How did you take the three cupboards out or did you retain any? Where did you get the tank? And have you any pics?

Par:- The location under the washbasin looks like it would not be high enough for a good gravity emptying is this why you changed to a Natures Head?

Tiger 79:- From what I can google there is no information on where Bavaria fit them on the 36h that's why I asked the question.

Thanks for all your replies, and Merry Christmas and Happy new year to all the forum.

Hello.
The installation in the locket is high enough for the tank to empty it self. I rally don't understa how the PO manager to installera it.
We had a Natures Head in our previos boat and we rally like it. No  full holding tank, we can stat in the same place long time and it never clogs up. Just an other way to handledare the issue, for us the right way. Lots of reading If you Google Composting Head. Most User ses to be happy with it, People Who don't have them not so  :)

Mick

On my boat there was a cupboard over the washbasin against the bulkhead. The water pump, changeover tap and shower drain pump are in there. They needed moving slightly to make room to get the tank as high as possible. I had the tank made in Corfu in Greece out of welded polyurethane. If you are in the UK you can get similar tanks made by a company called Tek Tanks. You need to work out the dimensions and probably make a dummy tank out of wood such as MDF and decided where all the fittings go. There is useful information on their website on designing holding tank systems.
