Glassing over hull-deck joint?
« on: November 14 2024, 09:27 »
Hello, As sealing of deck-hull connection seems to leak on our Bavaria 39 C. I want to fix the problem for good. My idea was to remove old sealant and reseal it again with sika, but 2nd thought is just to glass around that joint on whole lenght of the boat. I already removed toe rails and all stanchions, re-drill and filled all holes with epoxy now only that resealing part left.  Have anyone done it? Do you think 1 layer of 300g glass with epoxy will work? - I dont see any reason to make it thicker as its only purpose will be to seal connection.  I have little concerns about it as in some places deck is wider than hull in other it is like on the picture below 5-10mm smaller.

Hi,

My 2001 Bav 47 cruiser has had the joint glassed in 2020. They used 3 layers of fiberglass and filler applied into the joint (polyester). I'd strongly advise you to apply more than one layer of fiberglass, you'll add strength to the joint, avoiding premature failure, as the hull will flex under load. Adding further layers once you've gone through all the trouble of removing the deck hardware is no biggie.

As my teak toe cap is partly rotten, I'm now planning on further upgrading (in my eyes) the toe cap to aluminum. That will remove some flex from stanchion bases and make them waterproof for a longer time.
