Scuttlebutt / Re: Discussion: Passing the torch or shutting down
« Last post by tiger79 on January 08 2025, 20:58 »
I reckon I'll be speaking for all of us if I say a big thank you to you, Yngmar, for keeping this forum alive for so long.  It's not an easy job and, as you've said, the legal aspects are becoming onerous.

So if the forum closes, well we've had a good run, exchanged a lot of knowledge, and enhanced our ownership experience.

Announcements / Passing the torch or shutting down
« Last post by Yngmar on January 08 2025, 19:06 »
It's time to do this. Unless someone is stupid enough to take on this role (see below why that is not a good idea), the Bavaria forum will be shut down by March.

The reasons are multiple:

  • Hosting costs have skyrocketed and the donations are no longer covering them, we're still about €200 in the negative after the last call for donations and I'm not willing to go further out of my own pocket.
  • Due to massive increase in spam/troll factory accounts, I have to approve signups manually, which is time consuming and also annoying for new users. Automatic filtering no longer works in the age of LLMs.
  • The UK has passed some idiotic legislation and claims it affects us, which is why lots of forums are shutting down. I have no interest in dealing with this nonsense. For a more thorough explanation, read here and here.

Should anyone consider taking over, you're welcome to, but considering the legal implications above, you'd have to be a lawyer with a lot of time on your hands. I'm a technical guy with technical skills (which you'll also need) and no interest in fighting legal battles.

If you do want to take over, in addition to the above legal chops you also need to know these things:
  • Domain ownership, WHOIS records, how to transfer a domain
  • DNS hosting, DNS records
  • SSL certificates/letsencrypt
  • PHP hosting (gandi.net currently)
  • Forum software (SMF in this case)
  • SQL databases (MySQL unfortunately)
  • HTML/CSS, there's a few customizations and the download page, which is handmade.
  • Bit of PHP hacking (very little, but there is some custom code)
  • Forum moderation
  • Member administration, which means telling troll factory and spam signups from real boaters. This takes a lot of time, although you could find volunteers. If you mess it up, you also have to clean up the resulting spam postings and complaints afterwards.

I can do a handover if someone is found, but I do not have the time to explain how these things work, so you need to already know how to host such things yourself and have done domain ownership transfers before. And be sure you read the legal nonsense first. Frankly, I don't see why anyone would take on this personal risk.

It's sad but that's the way things are going in this world right now.

Thanks for all the good information shared. I hope it gets archived somewhere, but please don't all hit the server with some bulk-downloader all at once.

Cheers,
Yngmar

The Lewmar code is on the window “glass” itself, usually between the handles..

Thanks for the replies so far.
The handles on the hatch say lumar.  Further i purchased a (wrong sized) size 60 hatch and the youtube video about how to replace the lewmar lid was spot on and the hinges fit perfectly - the lid was just too big.  So, sure it is lewmar.

I looked for the lewmar lens id and could not find it.  Went all the way around peeling back the gasket etc.  just couldn’t find it.

Still looking for an answer.  Thanks!

Maybe you can find it on this list! You can source it at SVB

Lewmar will have a unique number engraved in the hatch. With this number any Lewmar supplier can support you. If it is Gebo, you also could contact them direct as they will know what they supplied to Bavaria

Bavaria Yacht Help! / Re: Injector nozzles VP TMD22p-c

Hi blue-max, “engine smokes a lot” is quite subjective and hard to tackle.
First question is always, “what kind of color is the smoke?”, especially under high loads. blue/ white smoke would indicate potential wear of piston rings and should be noticeable in oil consumption, real white smoke is steam from the exhaust, grey/ black is combustion (turbo, airsupply, poor nozzles) or overload (boat reached max hull speed and does not plane, too big propeller fitted, poor hull cleanliness) Does the engine smoke more than previously, because Volvo’s just tend to smoke more than other engines. FYR: On our previous Bavaria (VP 2002 engine) I had the injectors also removed and tested at 2500 hrs, they still cracked (opening pressure and spray pattern) like new. You dont need to replace them, just take them to a diesel engine workshop who can do the testing for you.

With regard to fuel consumption, look at the consumption curve of the engine. I found it for you online. Your consumption at 2500 rpm is at the normal curve…. FYR, For our D2-55f running at 2500 rpm, 5 - 7 litres per hour is a common consumption and makes rediculous speed… :)

Are you sure it's a Lewmar hatch? Some were fitted with Gebo hatches.

Hi.  I have a 2003 Bavaria 38.  Cracked the lens in the hatch over the salon.
I have measured amd none of the standard hatches from lewmar seem to match.  Is this a custom sized hatch?   On another post someone said their Bavaria 32 used a custom hatch size 556mm (i measured mine at 560 but i could have easily been off a tad). The part for that was 20081900.
Does anyone know the part for the 2003 38?

I have reached out to Bavaria with no luck in email or calls.
