Title: Refixing Transom Bumper Strip
Post by: Lazy Pelican on September 28 2016, 15:51
We have a B39 2006.
Sailing in heavy weather our transom bumper strip has come off - again!
I've previously reglued it using Sikaflex, but it's only a short term fix.
Has anyone successfully refixed theirs?

John

I have a B37 2006. During an Atlantic crossing I found my dock bumper streaming behind one morning, the sealant having given up in the heat (I expect). Fixed it with this: http://www.bond-it.co.uk/product/pu18/ and it hasn't moved since. Only used one tube and still have some left over  :D

Bond it sounds interesting- more of an adhesive than a sealant.
A friend has suggested ct1 - has anyone tried it?

Sikaflex is the name of a whole range of products, I suggest that an adhesive (say 292) rather than sealant (291) should be used.

CT1 is a sealant similar to Sika 291, but cheaper.

I have replaced my b37 2006 bumper, using sikaflex 291.
I replaced bumper whilst boat was still in the water, so it was a two person job.

I've refixed using Sikaflex 291 several times. It usually lasts a season and then comes off again. The problem is finding something that will bond to the plastic bumper strip. I find that all the 291 is bonded to the boat but that the bumper strip has very little adhered to it.

This (http://www.ct1ltd.com/en/how-to-bond-pvc-to-pvc.html) suggests CT1 is well suited for the job. Not sure if better than Sikaflex 291 or just marketing blabla, I too assumed they were much the same stuff. Maybe worth a try?
