Title: Polishing the hull B30
Post by: John G on March 06 2024, 21:20
In Spain we have to pay someone to do the anti foul.
They have said this. Quote. “We also include the hull polishing work, in case you want to do it. We always recommend it for the good maintenance of the Gel Coat.”
Is this worth doing ? Quite expensive.

Polishing and waxing the hull is always a good thing.  hopefully, they are competent at the work.

I polish the hull every year, it's probably not necessary, but it looks very nice.

If you want to do a good polishing, it is a painstaking process and the accessories are not cheap.

Besides a better look, protecting the above water surface of the hull with a good quality wax also prevents the gelcoat from aging. This oxidizing process is due to the UV impact to the gelcoat, making it more “open” for dirt to stick better and making it look dull. Before our current boat we had a Bavaria 300, which took me approximately 4 hours in total to polish. Previously I used 3M marine wax, which lasted for the season, final years I switched to Riwax hard wax with very good results. Upon the sale I even got compliments from the surveyor for the good appearance of the hull (after 30 years!).
So a good quality polish is really worth the money…

Polishing is certainly worthwhile.  My Cruiser 37 only comes out of the water once every 2 years for antifouling and polishing.  I polish by hand, applying 2 coats of Meguiars 45 Polish and then 2 coats of Meguiars 56 Pure Wax.  I use these products because they're so easy to apply by hand and polish off by hand.
