Title: Which is the right direction to furl a 2003 Selden mast
Post by: Bavchi32 on September 06 2016, 16:00
In the summer edition of Yachting page 12, there is a graphic showing anticlockwise furling. The sail on our Selden masted  2003  32 is furled clockwise. Checking the Selden manual that came with the boat, it is not mentioned if the furling is designed to be clockwise or anticlockwise. We bought it like this and the sail works okay, except it's not as smooth as I had hoped.

Anyone know if clockwise is the right direction for a 2003 32?

It should furl anticlockwise (when viewed from above).  The slot in the mast is offset to starboard, so the sail has an easier path when furled anticlockwise.  Additionally, the furling spar itself is assymetrical, making it easier to start furling anticlockwise.

Well that will be a nice quick fix and hopefully improve the furling.

Thanks so much for the info.

If you have the furling winch in "ratchet" locked mode when you furl then it should turn Anti-clockwise. We only furl with the winch in ratchet mode.
