Hi folks I wrote this for the BOA.

Excellent walkthrough, and very entertaining. Quite frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if you have a bigger, more engaged audience over here. I dumped my BOA after the first year - for me, it was a waste of time and money.

Mark, Hi shame you are not BOA member. I am the vice commodore, there is a new commodore, Bob. The BOA has new committee, and we are looking to update the web site and bring new members and interests to the site.
There are lots of thoughts on how we can best serve our members. I believe the more clubs; associations and web forums there are, the better it will be for Bavaria owners. There is room for everyone and it?s good for the owner. As, Darwin said; ?It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change?.
I think Bob Dylan said something about times changing but I cannot remember what it was, as my mum told me long ago when I was a very, very small boy. :-)
I like this site there are lots of good info-bits.
When I get a chance I will add some more articles, hopefully they will be of use.

Well, I apologise if my comments were offensive, and that certainly wasn't my intention but in 2013, returning to sailing after 15 years and being new to Bavarias, I was in need of a site for Bav owners that answered the million-odd questions I had. At the time, I'm afraid the BOA site didn't do that plus it cost me money. This one is massively helpful and free so for me it was a no-brainer. However, that is my personal view - please don't let that stop you from continuing to post your very well written articles here. They will be warmly received.

It may be free to you, but for me it costs a lot more than BOA membership :)

As a new Bavaria owner (of an old boat), I find this forum extremely helpful, simply because it is open, so I could go and ask pre-purchase questions, and also peruse the archives to learn what ails other Bavaria owners.
I've since also taken up the BOA on their free membership offer and had a look around their forums, which seem helpful, but due to being closed are much more limited in audience and participation.
Since I'm a big fan of openness and the "donate to support what you like" model, I'd rather give some cash to Nigel for running this than cough up a mandatory membership fee.
I don't think the two are mutually exclusive though. While the forums definitely work better open, there are things a more formal organization can do better, such as organizing spare parts, group purchases (there is already a BOA shop, although it seems to be mostly selling merchandising at the moment) or events. Or perhaps get some official owners manuals online (*cough* still looking for one for my boat).

Yngmar, I think you have made some valid points, I tend to agree.
Open should be the way to go. Maybe that will happen. If I may indulge you just a little longer.......... I joined the BOA for a couple of reasons. (And I paid my £15)
Firstly I wanted to sail, socialise and connect with other yacht owners in my area, with boats of similar characteristics. Secondly, I have been a Bavaria since 2003, a boat owner since 1991 and sailed since I was 12 or so. I have been an engineer for 30+ years. I want to pass on my knowledge and experiences to others. There is a lot of bad service out there and boat owners seem to be the target of some real rip-off merchants! Hopfully it will be of use?
I joined the BYIF for the same reasons. Both sites have some good information, lots of banter, and some real characters!
I really believe that there is a place and demand for both BOA and BYIF they both provide different things, even if there is a lot of cross over in some areas.

Hi Nigel, I can only thank you for the great effort to run this site which I find entertaining, informative and for the ability to find someone every ready to help. I pay lots for sailing magazines so I have made a small donation. but can I say it asks for a monthly donation and I would willingly give quarterly or annually if possible.
I think my views on the BOA are similar to those of others, for instance if I were more sociable and had my boat near the Solent then I am sure I would join.

I think Salty's made a valid point but I wouldn't have thought it would be a problem showing links to 3rd-party pages that have downloadable manuals (if we find any).
As an aside, I'm still looking for the wiring diagram for a Panel 420; hint, hint!
