Common minus pole is connected to block of motor. I believe this will not be a problem.  But i will ask. Now I have to solve the wiring first

If the original alternator was isolated, that's usually to minimise saildrive corrosion (on later engines the saildrive itself was electrically isolated from the engine).  Fitting an unisolated alternator may give you corrosion issues.

Perhaps ask a marine electrician to take a look and advise you?

Bavaria Yacht Help! / Alternator wiring
« Last post by marioxp on March 31 2024, 10:44 »
Please help me with wiring the alternator.  I changed the alternator, until now I had the standard alternator that comes with the VP2030, the new alternator is 100 ah.  I made the mistake of not taking a picture of how the old alternator was connected, I think it was isolated so it needed a minus wire.  As far as I can see, the new alternator minus pole is connected via the housing to the engine. Service technician who installed the motor is not an electrical specialist and obviously connected it incorrectly.  Because the batteries don't charge and the rev counter doesn't work.  I see that the two wires are not connected, but I don't know where to connect them.

Update #2

I got the chainplate off yesterday - in fact it was not under much pressure. I held the deck bolts with a hex wrench and undid the nuts of the backing plate to which the tie rod connects. I was fully expecting the bottom plate to "snap down" when loosened, however this did not happen. The tie-rod is still stuck to the hull. It is a rather elaborate system. Once I get it all off I'll upload a picture. I need to go buy a 45 mm wrench..

Update - the PRV was faulty and was allowing pressure to escape, which is why the pump wouldn't turn itself off.  Unfortunately, the PRV is totally inaccessible, buried beneath a rats-nest of Whale quick-connect fittings.  I initially thought there was no alternative to biting the bullet and removing the calorifier.  But then I thought I'd try a bit of lateral thinking and I accessed the leak-off pipe from the faulty PRV, cut into it and fitted a new PRV inline.  Works perfectly and saved me a lot of hassle.

For Sale & Wanted / Bavaria 49/50 sails
« Last post by IslandAlchemy on March 27 2024, 15:19 »
If anyone is interested, I will have a Quantum main and genoa for sale at the end of April (when they will be back in the UK).

Taken from my 49, they will also fit the J&J 50 and 50 cruiser.

Will update this post when I get them back home, but just thought I'd put this up here now in case anyone is looking.

First update of this repair:
1) SVB24.com does not stock anything for the Bav47 cruiser 2001 chainplates and tie rods;
2) Bavaria official customer support, to whom I called, said it is a very old boat from an old era of the Bavaria company and they likely have nothing available to support the repair - drawings, manufacturer, nothing.

So that means I'll have to manufacture the part myself - which is not a problem. I'll take the rusted stuff off the boat, try to measure some torque specs, create drawings and send them off to a shop.

My main question presently is the amount of pre-tensioning of the tie rod that links the chainplate to the bulkhead. There must be some, however I'm unsure how much and how to measure it really. It must be equal or more when compared to rig tension. Bolt removal-torques will not be an adequate number as they are rusted and there is more friction when compared to a new part.

Any input on the tie rod tension is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I agree... Relay's stuck, try tapping it fairly hard, it might dislodge the contacts.

Maybe the relay is faulty. It is located behind the switchboard.
