Bavaria 42 Cruiser Autopilot Drive

Hi All
I live in Tasmania but have a year 2000 Bavaria 42 Cruiser in Greece. Ionian Sea area. I will eventually sail her back to Tasmania.
She is currently fitted with a wheel pilot. Not up to the job.

Very likely I will fit a Raymarine system with a linear drive.

My question is, is a Type 1 12V: M81130 drive up to the task? Raymarine say it is, maximum boat displacement 11,000 kg. Bavaria 42 weighs in at, according to specs., 8,400 kg. Even with fuel, water etc. still somewhat below the 11,000 figure. But should I fit the Type 2 drive ?

There are three considerations here, cost and power usage and drive thrust power. Rule out cost as it must work for a long trip. Power usage is important but is a secondary matter compared to the "muscle" ability of the drive to do the job conclusively. And not wear out though I would likely carry a spare.

Very much appreciate some advice from members that have experience with a Type 1 drive on a similar yacht.

And, any comments on using a rotary drive ?

Hi Lazy Pelican and thanks for your reply. I have been to Deiter's shop actually, up behind the bus terminal. I was asking about solar panels.

What I am really after is responses from people that have a Bavaria 42 or similar fitted with a Raymarine linear drive. There are squillions around so come on you guys and gals some help please.

I had a type 2 drive on a previous boat - moody 41 - a bit heavier than the bav. I had to replace motor in drive unit after 800 hours use

Blue-max thanks for your comment. Hope you were not 1000' offshore when the drive clagged.
