salt water pump volvo 2030md 2002 engine.
« on: August 27 2014, 11:51 »
Hi All, anyone had to change seals etc on the impellor housing / shaft into the engine block? Ive noticed a very small oil leak and also a drop or two of salt water. I had to motor 6hrs last week around 2000revs and found about 6 drops oils and same salt water in in sump, up till now the sump has been clean dry.

Is this a job for the coming winter lay-up?  or normal after 1300hrs on the engine?  Do I have to use genuine volvo parts? Or can you recommend other suppliers. Im quite happy to carry on this season as is,

rgds Ray

Hi Ray

Coincidentally, I noticed some salt crystals (no oil) on my 2001/2030 (1070hrs) last weekend. I spoke to a friend who has just replaced the seal in his daughter's 2020. He said it's a doddle (but a bit fiddly). Next time they're down (couple of weeks), we'll be having a go at mine so I'll be able to give you a list of what to do and where to get the seal, if that's any help. Happy to be pre-empted by anyone who has already done it, of course.

Used to be but after doing time in France, have now settled in Plymouth area. The old tub's in Sutton Harbour if you're ever visiting...

I nipped into the local not-Volvo engine place today and they printed me off an exploded view ©Volvo of the shaft assy. You'll see there are two little seals, one to keep out the oil and one to keep out the water. Each one is about six quid. The chap did say it should last to the end of the season if it's not gushing out but it's a pump-off job. Neighbour says not if you're careful (and he'll be assisting). I'll report back in due course.

As a tenuously linked aside - anybody suggest the best way to drain the antifreeze? My MD2030D manual shows a drain tap just in front of the oil filter but I've got a square-headed bolt and what looks like an oil feed banjo right next to it. Either could be in the position shown but I suspect it's the bolt. How the hell do I avoid filling my bilge up with glycol? There's not enough room to swing a microbe let alone get a funnel or bucket (or dinghy bailer) in place. Drain most through the down pipe from the heat exchanger and the rest through the bolt hole? Any hints gratefully accepted.

Thanks Mark, really helpful information, this is why forums work. Not sure what your other problem is, I would try use a suction pump , the sort for engine oil removal, mine from Force 4, about £20. I use this vac/suction pump for every thing.

good luck

Of course! I've got a little 12v pump so why didn't I think of that? Nigel - we need a smiley of some old geezer slapping his forehead and saying "Doh!". Mind you, I've still got the problem of restricted movement/access on that side but I'm sure I can work something out.

Superb website, Marchi. Thanks for posting. Now in my Favourites.

Try this for Volvo diagrams, part, prices etc.

I got the repair kit from them (guess 59 Euro) including the cover with gasket, impeller, two ball bearings and two seal rings (simmer rings). Took of the pump and every thing apart and replaced the pieces. Make sure the "simmer rings" are put the right way, one keeps oil from coming out the engine, the other keeps wate from dropping out of the pump. You will find info on the net regarding simmer ring placement, maybe on Wiki.
