Exhaust Hose & Strainer, Ocean 40
« on: June 11 2024, 12:59 »
Hi, I will be installing a new Exhaust Hose and Sea Water Strainer. I am away from Boat, its in Greece.
I'd like help on Diameter of Hose and length from Muffler to Overboard including loops required.
I'd also like advice on Strainer, the original has Copper Piping and non transparent cap.
It's a Bavaria Ocean 40, MD22 Volvo.
Thanks.
Great to be back on Forum having changed email address..

Exhaust hose length was more than 5m with the loop in the portside locker, so a small fortune! Can't quite remember the diameter, around 50mm somewhere :)

The strainer we fitted was a Vetus seawater strainer FTR330/32. The black Volvo plastic pot failed as the brass fittings had dezincified and eventually crumbled away. The plastic was still fine, but Volvo wanted more for two brass fittings than the price of the entire Vetus thing, which also had the benefit of a transparent lid.

Could use the original wooden bracket and just drill some new holes to mount it, very straightforward. Put some silicone grease on the Vetus lid's O-ring and threads, else the lid can get stuck.

Welcome back :)

While you're at it, also check the anti-siphon vent, which occasionally needs cleaning/replacing of the tiny ruber valve.

Hose ID is 57mm same as the later D2 55 which uses the same exhaust elbow and muffler.

Thanks for your help.
I'll get the strainer anti syphon. At least I know the length of hose.
Thanks Symphony I thought that ID was 53mm app... absolutely no offence could you check that 57mm ID.
Tks. Marubio..

I have not checked physically, but Volvo hoses are 45mm for under 40hp, 57mm for up to 55hp and 89mm for the bigger engines including the turbo MD22. The exhaust elbow for the MD22 is 57mm and Volvo mufflers are only made with 55, 57 and 89 (plus bigger). There is no standard size 53mm hose, Vetus list 45, 51 and 57.
