steering cables hardware - single helm
« on: February 18 2024, 11:40 »
Does anyone know who to remove and replace the clamped end of the steering cable as shown in the attached photo.
This is the end of the cable which links to the helm driven chain via a plastic clamp and which anchors the outer sheath of the cable.

Does any one know where replacement parts can be sourced,

Lewmar (Whitlock) Constellation steering cables is the search term. For example here: https://yachtsteeringservices.com/product-category/whitlock-lewmar-steering/cable-steering/

Thanks - I have ordered one.
Do you believe that the cables should be greeced.  The outer is Teflon coated.

Well, that page sells grease and grease nipples for the system  ;D

Bavaria didn't fit the grease nipples on ours, so I used silicone oil (safe around plastics) where the vertical wires come down from the steering pedestal. It nicely ran down the wire into the conduit and the steering became very smooth and together with an overhaul of the rudder bearings you could move the wheel with a pinky finger. It lasted a very long time, perhaps because the wires go up on both ends, so the oil mostly stays in.

Ours didn't have any signs of corrosion, but it also is in a very dry, well heated part of the boat (engine compartment) on the 40 Ocean.

My problem is that having replaced the outer cable terminating fitting I now find the cable effectively "stuck" in the outer conduit. I think, as a result of age, corrosion and wire strands breaking the nner cable is stuck.

Does anyone know if a simpler cable and idler pulley system is available or even design details available so I can manufacture one.

Does any know where  I can get replacement conduit from.
