I have a Bavaria 30 fitted with standard 17kg plough anchor. We plan to overnight at anchor during the summer. Our boat neighbours suggest replacing with a Rocna (10 or 15) . Any comments welcome. JG

We too have B30 and have replaced the original CQR which proved unreliable.  I went for a Rocna and although not tested in severe conditions have been pleased with it.  You can download full sized templates from the rocna website to make a model and check it fit the bow roller with clearance for the hull. 
I bought the 20kg version, on the basis of bigger is better and it can come with us to our next, bigger boat when the time comes.

Avoid having an oversize anchor if you are going to buy a new generation anchor. There is no benefit in weight per se - all the NG anchors have holding power substantially greater than old style anchors of similar weight. For example a 20kg Rocna is recommended for boats typically above 36' and 7t displacement. A B30 displaces just over 4t so a 12kg Rocna or 15kg Vulcan is more than adequate according to The Rocna sizing chart. Suggest you also consider a Lewmar Epsilon, similar in design and performance to the Vulcan and the recommended size is 10kg.

I have a Rocna 15 on a bav 30. Holding is great, and we anchor at least 50 nights a year all over the west of Scotland.  You need to chamfer a bit off the locker lid for it to close due to the size of the shank. Also, it almost fits in the locker but not quite. For this reason I'd be happy to go down slightly in size - putting it fully away makes picking up buoys easier. You will still have plenty of holding power.

I decided on Mantus M1 20 kg for Bavaria 36. I am very satisfied. It digs in very quickly and holds firmly.
