Hi, I have been looking at the Volvo site and doing general search, but I can't see to find...

How much electrical power does the generator on the Volvo Penta D2-50 generate?  I know it will typically generate MORE power with higher RPMs, but still there is almost certainly a limit. But, say at 1600 RPM, what should I expect?

I am creating "power plans" for the boat (I just purchased), one for on the hook, another for cruising. For cruising, I need to know the power output from the generator.

If you can, please 1) answer the questions; 2) provide your source (url or otherwise).

Thanks much in advance,
Matthew

It has a max output of 115A.  At cruising revs, maybe 60-70A max output, but this all depends on whether your systems, batteries, etc can accept that rate of charge.

At such output it won't be long before overheating and melting the regulator though, especially if running on low rpm, as boats often do :)

Any good A2B charger or alternator smart regulator therefore has a temperature sensor that is fitted on the alternator housing to prevent it from cooking. Or fashion one yourself.

Thanks for the reply.  I am sorry, I don't know what an "A2B charger" is.  Can you please expand that?

Thanks,
Matthew

Our Bav 38 2003 D2-55 Volvo is equipped with a Valeo 60A alternator. It has a V-type belt. Later models of the D2-55 Volvo are equipped with 115A Mitsubishi alternator (with flat belt). For full power (60A) you will need to run the engine at 3000 rpm. At 1600 engine rpm you might expect 40A max.
