Fuel shut of valve
« on: January 28 2023, 14:03 »
Whilst I replace the sail drive diaphragm, I am also replacing the hateful CAV filter with a Racor type. I also want to replace the fuel shut off valve as I have seen this create problems with blocking (not least, to that famous long distance single hander Patrick Laine during a gale!).

I read the below with interest.

Does anyone have a copy of that PBO article? What upsized valve would you recommend? I don't like the idea of the strainer, as that is kind of doing the job of the primary filter, and with a Racor that'll be nice and simple to replace.

You tend to find that the boats where the fuel valve gets blocked are those where someone has drilled into the tank to put a heater feed in, and left the plastic swarf in the tank.

Since I had a hard time finding any through-bulkhead valve at all, ours is the smallest size I could find with a bunch of reducers. That was a number of years ago and has never caused the slightest issue. There's no strainer in front because why.

I wrote about it at the time and there's a photo of the valve: https://bavariayacht.org/forum/index.php/topic,1560.0.html

Would recommend this setup. The filter is a breeze to change compared to the cursed CAV design. Also easy to drain out fuel and pour back in at the top, saving you having to bleed much air, or any at all if you got the MD22.

That is the valve I have just used on my refit project. Comes from ASAP, but the hose tails were from the local HypHose. Nice bit of kit.

I fitted the shut-off valve from ASAP also to replace the 'gas' valve fitted on my boat as concerned it could easily get blocked. Replaced the old hoses at same time. Valve needed a timber packer behind otherwise easy install. Also fitted a diesel in line filter before the valve to capture any sediment or 'bug' but has always stayed clean - easy to check and replace https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171163994725

Ah ha, thank you all. I have read that post of yours, Yngmar, many moons ago, just couldn't locate it again. Perfect, and exactly what I am hoping to achieve, thank you for writing it up.

Is this the puppy?

That is the one. You will need a packing piece in the other side of the ply so that is sits tightly when you screw it up. Mine goes through 9mm ply and I used 2 Plastic U pipe clips to hold the body which was just right to allow it to clamp tight. Also 1/2"  BSP to 3/8" hose tails to take the fuel hose.

For those who come here later, note it has fallen off the ASAP website, you can find it here: https://www.aquafax.co.uk/products/ag-bulkhead-ball-valve-cold-1-2-bsp-female-ports-1-75342
