Starter motor brushes d2 55

Hi to all ,
Today my ignition motor brushes got stuck . I hit the back of the motor with the winch handle and started ok .

Has anyone changed them on his own ? Is it easy ? The spare parts resources I have are limited , you think automotive parts can fit ?

How many start ups from your experience I have still ? Roughly

I’d try a motor electrical repair shop.

While you’re at it also check if the gear is worn out.
And keep in mind the price for a spare part when planning to refurb the old one. The starter of the D2 is surprisingly cheap, compared to how expensive other parts are: €135

My concern is if I ll have around 10 more ignitions till I have it repaired …

It's more likely the solenoid which is failing.  This can probably be replaced separately and relatively cheaply.

Not likely to be both faults at once, but a yacht starter motor has a rather different life cycle from a car, i.e. infrequent use and very long periods of layup..
So I would reckon that the brushes are fine but the solenoid could be stuck through lack of regular exercise..
Maybe remove it and strip it down, it may be all that's needed, and as others have pointed out parts are cheap since these are mass produced for the automotive industry..........Bill.

The solenoid is activated when you press the starter button (or turn the key).  The solenoid moves the starter motor pinion along the shaft to engage with the flywheel, at which point the solenoid closes two contacts which then provides the 12v power to the starter motor.  In my experience, the solenoid contacts are more likely to fail than the starter motor brushes.

Yes I agree. .
Although it's worth adding that if the solenoid contacts fail then there'll still be a loud audible 'clunk' when the starter button/key is operated as the pinion engages with the flywheel but the engine will fail to turn over.........

Thanks all of you ,
I finish my trip tomorrow and I ll have a couple of days to work it out , I ll take the starter out , I saw is just 2 bolts , and take it for service , although first I ll have a look by my own to have a clue what is going on inside

Crikey..! Is the black gunge grease that's escaped from the rear bearing and mixed with carbon dust from the brushes..??

Looks like … so another thing to check every lets say 5 years ? Maybe the technician should have mentioned me to do it when I made a total rebuilt 2 years ago ( the engine had no issues apart from leaking in some places ) ,anyway it lasted almost 20 years .
