Bav 39 steering wheel

Anyone know the diameter of the wheel on a Bav 39? I am back home so can't measure mine and was thinking of buying a folding wheel to take back to the boat.

40 inch, i bought the lewmar 40 inch folding wheel on special offer with Lewmar and had it delivered directly to Portugal. Great buy and makes the cockpit much more spacious when moored up.

I went to remove the wheel when I was last on the boat to make room for getting on and off but the wheel didn't want to come off, I had removed the lock wheel and the winch handle nut but didn't see anything else to remove, and didn't want to force it. I had seen it off before when the electricians were attempting to fit a wheel pilot so know it is a tapered shaft - am I missing something or do I just need to apply a bit more force/ hammer tap?

a good tug! but from as close to the hub as pos, dont want bend it. You can hire buy a pulley or make up one with couple g-clamps, couple bits wood to stop any scratching, then put small spacer on the top of boss and twist the g-clamps.

Ah thanks Nornie. Will have another go when I get back to boat just hope lewmar can get the new wheel to the boat same time as me.

Squirt some penetrating oil such as Plusgas behind the wheel onto the shaft. The hub is on a keyed taper and once you get it moving it will pop off easily. If you are going to use a lever or puller then do it on the hub as the spokes are only clamped in to the hub.

And put a large towel or cloth down on the decking under the wheel so you don't lose that all important key which may fall out of the taper and bounce overboard! When replacing the wheel fix it in place with a bit of grease and grease the taper for easy removal next time. Use your winch handle to loosen or tighten the locknut.
I have found the folding wheel a seriously good addition , much admired by guests for its utility.

Got the new wheel eventually, Gouvia marina denied having received it so I went cruising for 2 weeks while I chased up Lewmar only to find that it had been delivered two weeks before I got there!!

Got the old wheel off by tapping the nut with a rubber mallet after it was loosened off a bit. Guess what, the folding wheel fits but I can't turnit far as the plastic joining bits foul the top half off the engine instrument panel. This is the Bav 39 with the non standard steering system aaaaaaaaaagh.

I have 2 options, sell the folding wheel - it was the full priced one as Lewmar said the blue leathered one they had in offer wasn't on offer anymore and their web site was in error. They did agree to,let me have it at the offer price tho, phew. Second option maybe modify the instrument panel - a serious consideration, it's only the fuel gauge on the top half of mine so not too bothered about it being at an angle.

I will check mine (Bav 33C) and if it fits, let me know how much you want for it and how much it could cost to ship to Cyprus.
Let me know the details of the wheel ie: 40" or 36" (hoping for the latter to gain 2 more inches on both sides).
Also, if you can measure the clearance that it requires for the plastic couplings?

Decided to modify the engine instrument panels  - just had a new GRP panel delivered in UK to replace the one that was drilled through when they were trying to fit an autopilot (which didn't fit). Going to try and get a flat panel GRP/Plastic sheet to mount the instrument panel on instead - flat so there are no protrusions for the wheel to foul - hardly ever look at the instruments anyway and if I do I still have to lean right back or sit to see them. Anyone got diagrams with dimensions for the cut outs for the instrument panel itself so I can make the right size  hole whilst in UK. Its the basic MD2030D panel as in bottom of piccy.

The standard wheel just passes through the opening to the main cabin and has always lived in my aft cabin from day 1. Saves the leather cover from perishing too!
When we?re just day cruising and stop for lunch or a swim and need more cockpit space the wheel goes on to a dedicated pin on the bimini frame leaving a very clear cockpit.

 Lewmar part number 89400327 is a rail mount wheel holder, found it when searching for replacement brake spinner which I kicked overboard when carrying my new folding wheel to fit!! 
Mine had the plastic rather thaN SS cap, it didn't float though and is now in 4.5m of murky marina water under the pontoon. Really typical as the divers were around the previous day replacing all the lazy lines.
What led to this was me getting back to the boat with my new flat instrument panel made from some white 12mm plastic which happens to colour match the pedestal better than the creamy coloured original. Now I can use my folding wheel and sell the original wheel, I could attach it to the new arch when fitted to carry it as a spare but SWMBO would not like that.
Shouldn't have too much trouble selling the old wheel as plenty of charter companies around here likely to need a replacement, wonder what it is worth - 40inch tapered shaft, leather bound.?
