Coppercoat; Preparation

I'm thinking about coppercoating our hull.
I've read Yngmar's post on https://bavariayacht.org/forum/index.php/topic,2057.msg12933.html#msg12933, which is pretty exhausting  :tbu
I think good preparation of the hull is key, but due to my age i do not prefer a DIY project.
For further negotiations with the yard i would need the key requirements to describe the necessary works.
Is blasting or sanding the way to go?
Which preparations have to be done on the lead keel?

Any advice highly appreciated!

Blasting is less physical work. Sanding doesn't require specialist equipment. Both are be absolutely fine in preparing the hull, so whatever you can get a good deal on is fine. For the lead keel, due to the rough cast surface, blasting is probably better, followed by fairing with International "Watertite", then Interprotect. Although my hand labour with the drill wheel worked fine too and is still there, apart from a small spot on the front where we probably hit some UFO (just been diving down there cleaning it today). In hindsight, an angle grinder with flap disc would probably have been quicker.

Not much else to add that I haven't already put in those articles :)

Oh, I hope it's a lead keel. Iron keels are troublesome. In case of an iron keel I'd suggest watching SV Impavidus on Youtube (he's here too occasionally), I can't remember the details, but he's got a whole story about Coppercoat on an iron keel, along with all the problems they had and hopefully by now a solution for them! :)

Blasting is the way to go, including the keel. You are lucky if you have a lead keel as Iron is a problem. I had my new 33 done by the same people as Impavidus and they used a grinder to prepare the iron keel and patches started to lift after 3 years which I patched and it was worse the next year so I had it blasted then epoxy coat and Coppercoat - did the coating myself and it was IK when I sold the boat earlier this year. The hull was fine, in water all year round and just a jet wash once a year.

AMC who make Coppercoat are very helpful and give clear instructions on application - and it works.

I too am looking into CC application. Plan is to do it next year beginning of season. I have already a quote for the CC ingredients and am now looking into ways of getting the 12 years worth of antifouling of the hull.
Although not due to age, I still prefer the yard to do it...getting the stuff of is a mess. I just asked for a quote. Let's see what's coming back.

I have applied "copper coat" using my own recipe. For preparation I sanded hull and lead keel. I hand painted a base coat of awlgrip to  the hull but on the keel  I used a Turkish brand epoxy. The copper epoxy combination has stuck  very  well on the hull(no abrading before coating) but not so  well on the keel  where abrading was probably necessary. Awlgrip is fantastic stuff - saw it on my old boat the day - still perfect  after 30 years!
