Removing rope clutch plate Bavaria 38
« on: July 13 2022, 14:51 »
Hi all
I am trying to replace broken handles .I have read the information available but not found a topic on my situation.
The heads on the bolts are t20 but the bolts are facing the toilet hatch so can’t get tool in ,mounding in the way.
Has anyone had this problem and solved it
Cheers Steve

There are no nuts in there. The clutches are attached with set screws into aluminium plates moulded into the deck. Difficult often to remove because of corrosion so plenty of penetrating oil and careful use of an impact driver.

They're hex heads, so you should be able to fit in an allen key, which isn't very long on the short end?

Does it help opening the hatch?

I’ve tried opening the hatch it doesn’t give anymore room, if I cut down a star key I may manage to get them loose but there will not be enough room to slide the rear one  out because of the moulding. Not sure if this is a bad design fault at manufacturing stage.

From your description I wonder how they managed to fit it in the first place, unless the clutches were fitted before the hatch?

Got a photo of the situation to help puzzle this out? I'm sure there is a solution :)

I misunderstood the problem. My understanding now is that the bank of clutches is mounted close to the opening hatch above the loo compartment meaning the pivot bolt that holds the lever in cannot be undone and removed as there is insufficient clearance. That bolt would have been in place when the clutch was screwed down onto the deck. Only solution is to remove the clutch from the deck, change the handle and replace the unit. Bit of a faff but not the end of the world.

My boat is different but the problem was similar. I opened a thread about it the 23/01/2022. Sorry I don't know how to add the link, but if you write "Rutgerson stopper" in the search box you'll find easily.
In my case it was a bad design problem and I had to remove the base plate. There were no other options and as most of the screws were "glued" to the aluminium base I had to brake the base plate, the screws and finally fix a different brand of clutches

Thanks guys
I was coming to the conclusion I was going to have to remove the base plate. Was just hoping for a little miracle 😂😂
It does seem a lot of hassle for a broken lever.
