Sail drive hull seal - replace
« on: June 11 2022, 10:05 »
Our sail drive outer hull seal (fairing) is starting to lift at the edges, so a winter job is to remove and re glue.
1. Can I reuse the old rubber fairing, or is it just easier to buy new.
2. I have a large tin of 2 pt glue for repairing our PVC dinghy. Is this suitable a suitable adhesive for the sail drive fairing?

Will PVC glue stick to gelcoat?

I believe the recommended product is contact adhesive, we used this last year I will let you know if it's still working on Monday when we are lifted out!

You may be able to get the old rubber fairing off without damage, depending on what glue was used.  When I removed mine last year, I had to chisel it off in bits!

The recommended glue is Bostik 2402; your 2-part PVC glue may be similar but I'd go for the proper stuff, to maximise the chance of a successful job.  It's important to sand the hull and the mating surface of the fairing before applying glue.

Thanks for the advice.
Does anyone know if Bostik 2402 (or equivalent) is available in Greece?

I stuck it on with Sikaflex 291i in 2016 and it's still firmly attached. Exact technique matters more than the glue - I posted about this a couple times before on here, probably will find it by searching :)

Hi
I made a new deal from a inner tube and stuck it on with eco stick sticks like sh*it 7 years ago and it's still there.
Cost nothing had all in the garage😀
