Bavaroa 39 Cruiser length query
« on: April 12 2022, 10:49 »
Hi guys

We are looking at a Bav 39 Cruiser but the LOA is conflicting on every website we look at - some say 11.35M and it goes up to 12.14M.  As relative newbies we believe that anything over 12M incurs higher costs etc.

Can anyone shed some light please?

Thank you in advance

Julie

Assuming you mean the J&J model (you didn't specify a year):

Length overall: 12.14m (that's the length from the frontmost bit of the boat to the rearmost bit, including whatever sticks out, davits, anchor, etc.) - this also varies if you stick a different anchor on :)

Hull length: 11.93m (that's the length of the fibreglass hull only, without any fittings)

Now depending on where you register the boat, different sizes matter. Under the German Flaggenzertifikat, the hull length is what's asked for, which is why these German built boats are often just shy of 12m hull length and the LOA is largely irrelevant ;D The registration office typically wants to see the builders data sheet with that number on it.

Under the UK SSR, the LOA is asked for, but no proof is needed, so experienced boat owners often will make small measurement mistakes when registering ;D They also commonly measure the boat without the anchor in place and davits are habitually forgotten or happened to be removed for maintenance.

For marina fees this only matters in some places, as many do not have strict 10-12-14m brackets. Some have 11-13-15m instead, others include the beam as well, in Spain they simply charge per square meter (length x beam). One place where it does make a big difference is if you're planning to go to Greece, where the price difference for the cruising fee is 30 EUR vs 100 EUR when going over the 12m mark.

So basically, don't let a few cm's on a bit of paper put you off buying a boat you like. And when it comes to registering, consider the above.

Thank you so much for such an explicit reply!!

Greece is most likely where we will head off too initially, of course depending on where & WHEN we actually find what we are looking for (on reflection this looks like it may take some time!!!)

Would it be naïve to think we register a document which transfers into our ownership so if the original paperwork says under 12M we are good to go?

The Bav 39 Cruiser we are looking at is 2006, i hope this clarifies

Thank you again!!

Julie

As Yngmar says if you are registering the boat on the SSR then you specify the length and 11.93m sounds good. Marinas (and the Greek authorities) generally take the length on the registration document rather than the builders certificate. If you register on Part 1 then the length will be different from any other method as the Tonnage methodology is different. However in the whole scheme of things the marginal costs associated with above or below 12m are not that significant - far more important to be happy with the boat for your purposes.

39ft = 11.89m
Our SSR states 11.89m and in 12 years of cruising Europe it’s never been questioned.
