Primer for propeller
« on: February 14 2022, 10:53 »
We fitted a new Volvo 2 blade fixed propeller 16 months ago to the saildrive.
The propeller had a black epoxy coating which we then antifouled with Trilux.
The boat is out of the water now and the propeller has been removed.
The tips of the blades had some minimal wear. Some of the antifouling and epoxy coating was missing leaving exposed metal.
The exposed metal doesn’t seem affected. On closer inspection some of the epoxy coating is flaking away from the metal. This suggests to me that it hadn’t bonded properly.
The propeller has now been cleaned and any loose material removed.

Should we now prime the propeller and then use Trilux or does it need another epoxy coating first prior to priming and antifouling ?

The black coating shouldn't have started falling off in so little time.  I'd be tempted to ask VP to replace it.

Tiger79,

I will contact VP and see what they can do. Only problem is that it is out of warranty. Still worth a try.

Thanks

Aluminium etch primer worked well for ours and the Velox Plus antifouling sticks to that.
