the tank has a small crack, 5 cm long, on the lateral side at the smaller end, where there is the filler pipe.
Any advise on how to repair it is welcome?

What is that tank made of? If plastic, you can weld it; look on eBay for plastic welding.

Tanks, water and fuel, are made of PE. PE can only be repaired by welding. I repaired my water tank (cut of 10 - 15 cm) by welding and adding fresh PE material for filling the cut. The heater should have a narrow tip for right precise dosing of the heat.

I used a professional hot air heater, which I could borrow from the company where I worked. I guess it could be possible with a hot air paint stripper with an additional special (DIY?) narrow nozzle.
