Shore power charger
« on: August 15 2021, 10:33 »
I don't know what's going on with my QUICK charger. Until recently, it worked normally and then it just stopped charging. I hear that it works and the green light on the FLOAT lights up, but it doesn’t charge the battery. It happened in the marina, only at one moment it stopped charging. I thought it was up to the marina connection but it no longer charges at my home bearth either.

Has anyone had a case like this?

And the one I have now has 30A and two leads.

If I have to buy a new one will this one suit me:
VICTRON BlueSmart Charger 12V/30A-3

I currently have 2 X 243Ah lead acid batteries but I may switch to Lithium one day.

My original charger failed, and I replaced it with the same Victron BlueSmart charger you're considering.  It seems to be an excellent charger!

I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to the electrical workings of the boat but 18 years charging seems to me exceptional by any standard. I’m in my 17th summer, running my 12v refrigerator plugged into shore supply all year round with still the original Bavaria Quick charger. Is there any appreciable advantage by changing to a different brand or charger type?

Not until it breaks.

In my boat (B46/2005) there  is an external fuse in the circuit between the charger and the house battery. Worth to be checked before you rip your charger out.

I'm not convinced by the victron products.
I have a solar charger (blue smart 150/70) which quit service after 2 years. Has already been changed unter warranty (5 Y), so we will see.

My quick charger (45A) does fine since 16 years, and i use it for charging my lithium batt (400Ah) (with changed charging parameters in the menu). Only issue was the blower fan inside, which got loud. I changed it 2 years ago.

Our Sterling charger lasted about 20 years and we replaced it with another Sterling, which is working very well. I looked at Victron chargers at the time but they weren't particularly well suited to our needs. The only marine stuff they had was undersized, the rest was massive blue steel boxes that weren't even splash protected and too big to fit our boat anyways. Happy with their MPPT charger though.
