Algae in fuel tank
« on: April 30 2021, 15:00 »
At last service I have noticed black particles on fuel prefilter.

I pumped out all diesel fuel (120-130L).

On most lower part of tank I've noticed algae, with pump (soak) and with foam brush on long stick I cleaned everything up. I poured a small amount of diesel a few times and everything soak up.

Obviously, algae formed in the reservoir over the winter.

All diesel fuel i pump through inline filter in to tank.

Is this procedure that I did enough?

Is there anything else I need to do?

I always add biocide every time I add fuel to the tank.

Which biocide you use?

I use Marine 16 Diesel Bug Treatment - https://www.marine16.co.uk/fuel-treatments/dbt

we put in marine 16 in October 20, made it to the boat last weekend, did a tank check and changed filters, all came out clean.

I used Marine 16 throughout the ten years that I owned my B36(2002), and never had any problems with the dreaded fuel bug. I did also make up a fuel polishing system which is housed within a motorcycle pannier box to make it easily transportable, and which is now redundant having sold the boat. So if anyone wants a ready made fuel polishing system, I’ve  got one that is ready to go along with some spare filters and all for £150 plus postage.

We are using GTL plus a biocide (Grotamar): Braces and belts,
