B39 2006 Battery compartment width?
« on: May 01 2021, 14:05 »
Our boat is in Greece and I want to order new domestic batteries to be there when we arrive.
At present we have 2 x 140ah FLA batteries in typical Bav configuration. I’m wondering if the width of the battery compartment is enough to fit 2 x 180ah batteries, which are each 35mm wider than the 140’s.
If anyone has a B39 and could measure the inside width of their battery compartment, I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks,
John.

hi, we have a 33c 2006, have just done the battery job and the max measured size I could use was 600x410x250,LxWxH the batts are under the seat on the port side in front of the fridge area.
the length didn't matter could have gone to about 1mtr.the width left around 6 inch spare as i needed to fit in some way of fixing down.(most new type battery's don't have the ridge at the bottom to fix them down)the concern was the height 250 including terminals leaves about an inch above to the seat base.
attached are photo of old battery's.
i know its a different sized boat but may give you some idea

Hi Phil,
That’s good info- thanks.
Just to confirm the width of your battery compartment is 410mm batteries + 150mm (6’’) space for fixing = 560mm?
That’s plenty for my purpose, but does seem a lot wider than I seem to remember mine is.

yes that's about it .I allowed 410 as I need to sort some way of holding them down, there is about 6 to 8 inch spare but i need to put in a couple of batons one each side to allow fitting of  a couple of hold down straps.
410 mm is the width i can go to and still get direct access from above to fit the batons, otherwise it makes them a bit more difficult as they would be under the seat frame base. not a mega problem would just have to have bendy wrists.
on the pic showing the end of batts, the seat Frome can just be seen in the top left, the white next to the batts is flat for about 4 inch then moulds into grp

Unfortunately mine is different. Batteries in a compartment under L shaped seats in front of chart table, running across the boat rather than bow/ stern. It’s the hull curve that make yours so wide.

I have a 2005 B39. 2 x 180AH do not fit. I presently use 2 x 140AH. Originally the boat was supplied with one 140AH service battery and a 55Ah start battery.
If you wish more capacity than 280AH perhaps a bank of 4 Varta LFS105 placed fore/aft might fit but you’d have to re-site the starting battery.
I can measure the compartment some time tomorrow if you wish.

Hi, my 2005 B39 has 4 6V AGM batteries 240aH that are 260mm x 180mm x 251mm (L x Wx H)
I am not the the boat so can't measure the battery compartment, but they fit with a bit of space to spare.

Hi Pea-Jay,

Our boat came with 2 x140ah batts & I’ve added a 3rd in the adjacent compartment below the battery charger. I want an easy swap, without rewiring etc, hence the question.
The 140’s are 189mm wide and the 180’s are 223mm wide, but otherwise dimensions are the same.
Please measure your compartment- that will at least concentrate my mind on the possible!

Thanks,
John

I'll measure the compartment for you this evening but I can assure you the 180AH won't fit as I wished to do this modification myself. Ill be in touch

I have re-measured the compartment and withdraw my earlier statement, apologies for any inconvenience! I now recall at the time I wanted the batteries in individual plastic boxes, which is why they wouldn't fit and then decided on the 140AH ones.

There is sufficient space for two 180AH. The compartment at it's narrowest point is 455mm wide for a length of 270mm after which it opens up to 475mm for the rest of the available space.
You will have to remove the starting battery and move the batteries a little till you get them in place, but it's doable. The compartment, measured from the cabinet end (boat centre line) to the hull is about 1200mm

What’s the depth of the compartment Pea-Jay, I think that might be a limiting factor from what I remember of mine when I was replacing my batteries

Looking from the centre of the boat to the side of the hull, a good 1.2mt internal, so it shouldn't be a problem once you take the starting battery out. As i said previously you'd need to manoeuvre them around a little to bring them in place side to side as the opening is smaller that the internal space.

Thanks PJ. Looks very tight but doable. It gives me options as I’m not certain that the 140’s I want are available.
