Fuel Guard / Water absorption thingie

Does anyone use something like this.

not used this thing but used simalar to contain fuel/oil spills at work, ime unsure of how it would get through the fuel to the water without first absorbing the fuel as it goes down to the bottom, unless its ment to be used to mop up when the tank is empty ?
i use a pela extractor with a tube through an inspection hole to suck out about 6 ltr off the bottom, then look at what come out.

Wow, where is your inspection hole? Doe you take out the sender for the fuel gauge?

I believe you're thinking of something different.  The stuff used to contain oil spills is polypropylene, which absorbs oil but pretty well resists any water.

the inspection hole is next to the sender, its about 80mm round cap with a 10mm bolt through it that draws up a sealed plate from within the tank, the previous owners had it fitted for this reason, they said they just used a small hand pump to do this job every season, so i figured i could use the oil extractor (already had one for the car) then see whats come out when i empty it. so far it works

We also suck up the bottom corner of the tank annually to remove any debris and any potential water (never found any).

Throwing stuff into the tank is likely to do more harm than good. It might disintegrate or just move around and block the fuel intakes. It's clearly designed for stationary heating oil tanks in buildings, not mobile use

Thank you. How do you get into your tank Yngmar? Do you have an inspection hatch also or do you go through the sender?

Ours has two unused take-offs, so I made a copper pipe that fits into one of them when open and dip it down to the bottom corners. It's stowed on top of the tank otherwise (and doubles as fuel dipstick).

Just unscrew that guy and poke in my pela?

that would work, just poke the pipe into the lowest part of the tank, if the pela is clean before you start you will se any gunge / water in the bottom or when you pour it out .hope it comes out clean

Thank you, I purchased a new cheap pela so I can properly inspect the diesel coming back. I'll connect that up to a bit of copper pipe I've got left over from an old gas install that I can use as a solid probe into the depths of the tank.
