Bav 36 2002 fuel pre filter
« on: December 26 2020, 16:13 »
Hi some questions on the fuel pre filter in the attached pictures

1) what make/model is it ?
2) Does anyone have a manual?
3) there are two outputs and two inputs ,I’d like to use the second output to feed a planar diesel heater , any thoughts on that ?

Don’t use that filter for the heater. You should have two extra connections in the fuel tank. One connectionpipe that goes down near the bottom, and one that goes about halfway to the bottom. Just connect there and use a universal inline fuel filter.

The B36(2002) that I used to have, had the same fuel take off from the fuel tank and the same fuel filter that you have, and using one of the two fuel take off points to feed the diesel heater just as you are suggesting. The only difference being that the filter had a glass/clear plastic bowl.  It worked well, and I would recommend using this rather than a second take off point from the tank in order to minimise the number of fuel filters onboard, and to keep to keep the number of different types of fuel filter to a minimum. The fuel filter you already have in place I believe is a CAV type, though I do not remember the specific model. What I do remember is that it was an absolute pain in the &#%£ to change the filter due to its location, and the number of rubber seals involved in the change almost invariably lead to minor leakage occurring from one or other.

I would not use that filter just to get rid of one filter in the boat. That filter is a prefilter and I don’t think it is suited for filtering diesel for a heater, you still need another filter. The other reason is that you should not mess with the engines fuel. Just one small air leak will get you a really big mess at the wrong time.

I change my heater filter once a year, and it has never had anything visible on it. It is a really easy task and will not cost you more than 2-3 euros. Of course if you have to use a heater more than normal people use, then you have to change the filter more often.

To help with maintenance of the CAV primary filter re position  it 10 inches above its location, it sure is easier  to work on.

As for heater fuel, see photos, no problem using existing grommet holes, I have one for heater and one for testing the bottom of the tank to see if I need to polish my fuel again

Hope this helps.

It's a Lucas CAV filter. They're ok and there are plenty of videos on you tube showing how to change them. However It's easy to make a mess of changing them.
I have changed mine for these.

Dead easy to change and has the bonus of a built in pump which makes it easy to bleed afterwards.
