Hello, our bi colour nav light has stopped working.  We tested the bulb first which proved the issue was not with the bulb.  Next we tested the voltage reaching the light and this was down to 8 volts.  We therefore suspected the cable which leads from the anchor locker to the light was heavily corroded which it was. We decided to cut the cable inside the forward cabin behind the forward bulkhead.  We tested the voltage here and it was 12 volts so all seemed good? 

We connected and run a new wire to the nav light unit and took the opportunity to install a new nav light at the same time.  We tested the voltage reaching the light and this was 12 volts and the light worked.  Shortly after the light stopped working and there was no voltage.  Subsequently the light has worked intermittently and we now suspect we have a an earth fault.

The stern light operates from the same switch as the bi colour nav light and works fine with no problem.

Has anyone experienced the same issue or could offer advice how to resolve.

Try to prove the bulb once again, if OK check following:
- first check all connections on loose contacts and corrosion. Always use TINNED copperwire and for the terminals proper crimping tools.
- Switch on the light circuit
- Measure the voltage between (+) and (-), beginning on the bulb side. If no voltage is measurable, proceed to the next reachable connection in the cable run in direction to the switch. If you can measure voltage, the fault must be on the way between this point and the last point, where no voltage could be measured.

There is no "earth". The power comes through the 2 wires, so your intermittent functioning is a poor connection at some point, probably where your new wire joins the original. So test again for voltage at all connections.

With respect, measuring the voltage is only one part of the story, it tells you that there is a circuit, but what it doesn’t tell you is whether there is sufficient current getting through to light the lamp, and in that respect I’m guessing that your bi-colour light uses an incandescent bulb rather than an LED which would light up on far less current.

I had a similar situation with a mast steaming light where the bulb tested good, voltage was getting through, but the bulb would not light up.
The problem was down to corrosion on the copper wiring connections which needed to be thoroughly cleaned back to bare metal in order to allow a sufficient number of amps to flow through to cause the light to illuminate. In other postings elsewhere on the forum some readers have used lemon juice and/or other substances to clean up the wiring connections, but whichever way you do it you need to get your wiring connections back to clean bright metal, and hence the recommendation for using tinned copper wire which does not tarnish anywhere near as readily as ordinary copper wire. If you are lucky a good solder flux and some heat might do the job, as also might lemon juice or plain old fashioned sandpaper, but if you can clean the wire ends well enough to tin the ends with solder then you should be able to get your light working again. If that doesn’t work then your next best solution would be to measure up and get yourself a length of twin core tinned copper wire, and use the old wire as a pull through to feed the new wire into place.

Hello, for good order and  to close this one out the fault was found to be a corroded section of cable between the forward cabin and the saloon.  Once this was changed the light worked perfectly.
