You don't need synthetic, just mineral 10/40 for diesel engines, specification a minimum of CF

As said above, mineral 10/40.

Don't use synthetic or you'll start getting oil leaks.

oils these days are generally pretty good, so I used to hunt out something of the right specification on ebay from one if the large oil companys, and buy it in 20 litre drums.  Buying it in larger quantities was much more economic than getting it in four or five litre cans from your local automotive store. Costco was another source for 20 litre drums of oil.

Lidl and Aldi often have a 10/40 mineral oil.  I tend to buy it when I see it as it’s cheap and does the job.  The one time I used a semi synthetic oil I got soot by the exhaust: stopped when I changed back to mineral oil.

CF-4 spec mineral (non-synthetic) oil at 15W-40 (the temperature range) is available at Lidl in many European countries. We just stocked up in Greece for €19 per 5L can (not on sale).

Previously in Portugal we bought it on sale from the Continente supermarket for €15 per 5L can (Galp brand, which is their big national refinery).
