Rigging Measurements?
« on: June 07 2019, 20:14 »
We are getting new sails for our 2002 Bavaria 40. We are currently in Mexico and not near a loft, so we are going to be buying them outside of the country. Rather than measure everything ourselves, we were hoping we might be able to find rigging measurements for our model boat. Does anyone know where this might be found, if at all?

Sailmakers will have access to a database with those measurements, but it's always good to confirm by measuring yourself, as a wrongly sized sail is an expensive mistake.

Many sailmakers in the UK provide measurement instructions on their websites. For example www.kempsails.com where you will find the downloads of the forms under the General tab. However they will also have details of your specific boat on file. It is best to have a dialogue with the sailmaker (or more than one) as there are now so many choices of materials and cuts to suit  different requirements. Sails are no longer a one fits all commodity and you will be spending a lot of money so you need to get it right.

The original factory sails were very basic and it would not be sensible to replace with the same low quality when there are much better sails available.

Hi Sailprincess,
Attached the measurements made available by my local sailmaker.
You may use them as a guidance to double check the actual measures on your boat.
As others have rightly said it would be too risky to order just relying only on standard measurement.
Hope it helps

Thank you! I measured E & J and they match. Will keep measuring. So helpful though, thanks!

Be aware that the diagram provided by Escapade is very basic indeed, and that there are other measurements needed which will more comprehensively determine the shape of your sails.
When I had a new main sail a few years ago, I approached Kemp Sails in the UK and downloaded one of their sets of diagram and measurement instructions. Amongst other details not shown in the diagram above, it also also took into account mast bend with tension on the back stay. There were several other points too, so you need to ensure that the instructions and diagrams you download from the sailmaker of your choice are specific for your boat rig.
