McMurdo M15

Has any one fitted  this model AIS to a Raymarine C80.

If you can you run through the fittings in detail please.

Particularly the DATA connections.

Hi Odysseus,
I’ve not had the pleasure of using either of these two instruments, let alone connecting them together to get useful information from the AIS.

However, looking at the web site http://raymarinec80.com/raymarine_c80_manual/  I was able to look at both the installation guide as well as the user manual for the C80 plotter, while a further internet search revealed that the McMurdo M15 (https://www.manualslib.com/manual/934350/Mcmurdo-Smartfind-M15.html) used the NMEA 0183 protocol as its output, and presumably has a cable coming from the instrument that you can connect to the plotter.

So far as I could determine from the plotter manuals, all you need to make the connection to the plotter is an NMEA 0183 plug which presumably you can get from your local Raymarine stockist, and note that the connections you would need to use are shown in one of the photos below and are marked on the right side of the plug as the NMEA 0183 +ve  and -ve inputs.

The wiring diagrams do not show any other components being used between the AIS instrument and the plotter. When connecting AIS to my own plotter I had to use a device to convert NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2000, and that was a headache and a half !! Your plotter does not appear to use NMEA 2000.

Hopefully the attached screen shots of the different pages should help, you will then need to set the output from the AIS unit to the baud rate of 38400 as per the instruction from Raymarine and which is apparently the standard output from the McMurdo unit. Good luck.

Thank you for the info, I have this, it's the actual connection in detail I am looking for, as there is only one data port on the C80 and that's in use. But there will be a method of joining this some place in the sea talk or a dual lead to the display.

Thank you again.

Not sure about NMEA 0183 but on NMEA2000 the usual method is to use a T plug or multiple T plug inline connector which allows for an extra cable or more to be connected to the same port.

I would think that a similar method should work on 0183?

Thanks both, I have changed my mind again after looking at an horizon 2200e vhf.

Which will do both and link into the C80 through the single port.

Thank you all.

I always leave my instrumentation as individual items, don't much fancy one failure leading to total !! Geoff

You probably know this but if you want an AIS transmitter as well as receiver then the SH 2200e is only a receiver.

I have my AIS Tx/Rx on my chart plotter and frankly would not be without it. I like to let others know where I am too.

Nowadays I would, as Kibo mentioned, go for an Rx/Tx unit (when I bought my AIS receiver about 9 years ago the price difference was huge).
Regarding use of a single NEMA 0183 port - try searching for Nema 0183 multiplexer - not sure about the C80 but if you do not have to specify in it the type of instrument connected to the port then I believe this should work since the multiplexer will provide "time slots" for each data type to come through.

Anyone out there know the settings and mnea wires from an Horizon GX2200e to a C80 plotter for AIS on the  C80.

Please only reply with specific solutions.  Not general talk thank you all.

Radio yellow to plotter white (on NMEA cable)
Radio white to plotter green (on NMEA cable)

Then go into the plotter's System Integration Set-up Menu, and set the NMEA Port to AIS 38400.

Well done Tiger. Thats correct. But there is another sneaky setting in the set up. The internal gps has a default of " off   " you have to turn it on.

Raymarine. Horizon. And Yaching Monthy all have got the wrong information.

I must say its brilliant.

Thank you.
