Size of running rigging on B40
« on: June 19 2018, 20:42 »
Hello
Is there any recommendation from the manufacturer what length and diameter all the running rigging should have? Would make shopping for new rigging so much easier. My last boat had a list for running and standing rigging.

Some of the owner manuals (see Downloads section in the menu bar above) have this information, but not all. You can just check your existing rope diameter though. Length is easy enough to work out.

The original may not always be the best - for example I replaced the mainsheet on my 33 with larger diameter. the blocks were big enough. Also the length was far too long. expect you will find most halyards are 12mm and sheets 14mm. reefing lines may well be 10mm, but some people replace them with dyneema 8mm.

I buy my ropes either as reel ends if the length is ok, or 100m reels and make up to length using halyard knots rather than splices. This can be as much as 50% cheaper than having halyards with eye splices made to length.

Dimensions for a 2009, Cruiser 40 are:

Dimension to the top of mast from deck 15.8 m
Dimension to forestay connection (jib/genoa) from deck 14.75 m
Approximate dimension mast base to winch(s) 4.2 m

Generally use 12 mm Poly/poly (Double Braid) for the halyards. For length, twice the height (Three times height for 2:1 halyards) plus the distance to the winch plus about 1.5 m because! Probably best to mouse out the old halyards and measure off these to get the length.
