Vented loop heat exchanger to exhaust
« on: July 06 2019, 11:00 »
Hi

On our 40 Ocean, D2-55, the pipe that comes out of the heat exchanger to the exhaust elbow has been cut half way along its length and two pipes added into the circuit to install a vented loop.

Is this standard procedure as there is no mention of it in the Volvo schematic and it looks messy and unnecessarily complicated.

Why do you need a vented loop in this part of the chain, the only thing I can think of is to prevent inflow from the exhaust outlet in the hull..

Thanks

No, that is not necessary if you have the normal anti syphon vent in the seawater feed from the water pump to the heat exchanger inlet

Looks like a flooded engine room waiting to happen. I'd get rid of it and replace the hose as originally designed. The 40 Ocean exhaust outlet isn't likely to siphon up into the engine at all.
