Saildrive Propeller Shaft Wear

Pulled the 130S Saildrive today to change the hull to saildrive seal.
Upon inspection of the propeller shaft, there are 2 score marks from the hardened seal.
What are my options here apart from buying a new shaft at ~€700!!
I thought I read somewhere that it is possible to shim the shaft so that the seal touches a new point?
There were not any shims/washers within the unit upon disassembly.

Hi.
I don’t think it’s as bad as it seems! I have a similar drive and replace the seals every haul out. There are always some marks similar to yours. My suggestion to you is to take the shaft to a machine shop together with a new seal and ask them to lightly clean the shaft and measure it with a micrometer to see how worn it is. In all probability the new seal will still fit snugly on the clean shaft and you should not have any problem at all. A professional will be able to advise you. However if I was in a risky situation myself I’d sooner resize the shaft and fit smaller shaft size oil seals (find suitable seals with s/s spring first!). Having said all that I’m almost 100% certain you’re still within the original size acceptable tolerance.

This is a very common issue, and the usual solution is to fit two SKF Speedi sleeves on the shaft. These are simply pushed on and require no machining of the shaft. The oil seals then run on the sleeves, which ought to have several hundred hours of lifetime and can be replaced again. You'll find plenty of information if you type that into a search engine. Don't forget to measure the shaft while you have it out.

The other way of going about a repair is to use 3 x 6mm wide seals as opposed to the standard 2x 9mm seals . The 3 seal lips land on a different part of the shaft . I did my 120se in 2010 and it is still fine. Geoff

After some thought, and as Pea-Jay stated, I don't think it is too much to worry about at present.
I've measured the shaft and noted the size. Will purchase some speedi sleeves for the spares cupboard!

Did you find the bearing change simple? were the shims replaced or reused and finally the bearing carrier at the back of the housing... how did you extract it?
