changing oil volvo d2-55
« on: April 08 2018, 08:21 »
I have been trying the change the engine oil on my Volvo d2-55 but can only remove about 50% of the oil.

I am using a small hand pump connected to the proper point. I can pump about 4 litres out and can hear the pump sucking air when I have finished.

It takes 4 litre to refill to the mark.

The new oil is clearly contaminated with the residue in the sump.

The manual says the oil volume is 10.5 litres.

Can anyone offer assistance.

Also what should the interval between oil and filter changes be.

Grateful for assistance

Regardss

It happend to me too until I realised that the tube was passing through the oil and resurfacing on the other side. Introduce the suction pipe through the dipstick tube and keep pumping as you go along. It should work.

Are you trying to suck the oil out through the dipstick tube or through the lower extraction tube? On my engine, an MD2020D the lower extraction tube comes from the bottom the sump and is located below and little further forward of the dipstick tube. Also, the lower extraction tube on my engine has a rubber cap over the top of the tube which was painted green like the engine, but is easily pulled off by hand, and subsequently re-placed once the oil has been extracted (the green paint wears off in the process). I’m not familiar with your engine, but 10.5 litres of lube oil sounds an awful lot. My MD2020 is nearer to 3.5 litres or less (haven’t got the exact figure to hand at the moment).

THanks for your adice,
I am using the proper port according to the workshop manual. - rubber capped port on the aft end of the block.
I will try again using the dip stick port.

The workshop manual says 10.5 litres.

I will check with local distributor.

The D2.55 is a rather large engine. If I’m not mistaken it’s a 2.2 litre Perkins and yes the oil capacity is about 10 litres! Probably it’s originally a tractor engine! I think the large sump capacity is advantageous for heat dissipation (via the oil) and also if you’re heeling hard and running the engine at the same time there is less possibility of oil starvation.

It is 2 litres and not a tractor engine but originally used in a variety of Leyland cars such as the Montego andin LDV delivery vans.

Are you sure its 10.5lites and not gallons ? On my MD22, which is also a 55hp, its 6 Litres or 10.5 gallons. Most of mine gets extracted using the extraction tube. It does leave a little old oil behind but not much. The new oil doesn't show any discolouration from the residue of the old.

Definitely not gallons. 10.5 (imperial) gallons is over  47 litres!

The D2-55 and D2-75 are 2216cc capacity and full spec can be viewed on http://www.bektasoglu.net/teknik/t_d2_55.pdf
The 2 litre diesel on the old Montego and Rover Sherpa van was the Perkins Prima (that uses a rubber timing belt). I believe there were a number of marinised Prima based units possibly under the Thornycroft brand.

My manual clearly states 10.5 litres from dry condition. A lot I know.
