2017 Bavaria 37C (cruiser) - larger anchor
« on: July 11 2017, 06:07 »
Hi all - need some help. My lovely new Bavaria 37 cruiser came with a "toy" 10kg Delta anchor and a lovely enclosed stainless steel bow fitting (the top is closed off).  Am a bit disappointed in Bav to fit such an undersized anchor.   Does anyone know if the Rocna 15kg will fit in the enclosed bow fitting? I know I can make a template from the Rocna website, but hopefully someone has already done this.  Cheers

I have fitted a Knox anchor to my 2016 37 - no modification required.

I have the 15kg Rocna fitted to my B37 2006. The shaft is a bit short so you need to add a 'captive' device to keep it on the roller. I use a 'dog lead clip' that is attached to the end point of the anchor chain and this is used to clip onto the chain near to the end of the shaft. When it is time to drop the anchor it is a simple one-handed operation to release it.

Like you my Vision 42 came with what I thought was a bit light for a 9500 Kg boat.
16 kg Delta. It held OK but this was only day anchoring. Most production boat builders are like like Bav, minimum will do.
Now we are cruising more i have changed up to a 22kg SARCA EXcell. (Australian made) Similar to the Rocna, so far all OK. Still running this with the 50 mtrs x 8mm chain that came with the boat. Although I do have 50 mtrs of anchor rope ready to add if needed.
The only thing I checked was the anchor winch could handle the extra weight.

Safe boating

Thanks for all the replies - appreciate the info.  I have made up a pattern and it does seem like the 15kg Rocna will fit, so will try that I think.
The other interesting thing I found was that, although the Lewmar winch manual said my gypsy was a rope/chain gypsy, turns out Bavaria did a special order chain only gypsy, since they figured the anchor well is not big enough for rope and chain and wanted to discourage using rope  - wish they had told me that before I bought 100m of nylon and spliced it onto the chain, only to find the gypsy cant work with rope !

Footnote - I did go ahead with the 15kg Rocna, replacing the factory 10kg Delta, and it fitted perfectly. So far it has been a gem to set. Just a gentle reverse and it has set first time, every time, and seems to really dig in.
